Until that ninja job comes through, you’ll find Nana working hard on additional books for her series as well as other fun, sassy romances for characters that won’t leave her alone. Excerpt

MADDIE
“Who the fuck invited you?” I snarl at Tyler. “And how the hell did you even find out where I live?”
“I stopped by Pete’s. Met Pete. Sweet guy, by the way. I would’ve imagined a strip club owner as being kinda—”
“Pete told you where I live?” Jesus. Thanks, Pete. Fuck.
“No, no, not exactly.” Tyler’s standing way too close to me now. The girls are pretending not to be able to hear him, but it’s clear they’re eavesdropping. I hope they’re better at fucking guys for money than they are at spying.
Tyler leans in closer still, and I really, really wish he would not do that. Because I hate him and don’t want him anywhere near me. Or maybe because I can feel the heat of his body and he kinda smells delicious. Which just pisses me off more because I hate him.
He lowers his voice and continues explaining how he found me. “Don’t be mad at Pete. He didn’t want to tell me where you live. Seems like a really ethical guy.”
“Except he did tell you where I live.”
“Well, yeah, but it cost me five grand.” My eyes go wide. “I mean, he’s ethical for, y’know, a guy who runs a strip joint.”
Nope. This is not going down like this. “Get. Out.” I’m pointing at the door now.
“No!” Diane whines. “No, no, no. We’re just getting to know him, Maddie! Oh, my God. This guy. Where the hell have you been hiding him all these months?”
“Where have I been hiding him?” I see red as I go to him, hands out, and slam them into his chest. The force of my push makes him step back… half a step. Maybe. “I wasn’t hiding him anywhere, you traitors! This asshole ducked out on me years ago. And when I needed him, when I was begging him to—”  I shake my head to clear my mind. “And then he shows back up and thinks everything’s gonna be fine just because we fucked a couple of times when I didn’t know it was him!”
There’s a beat before Annie says, “You fucked him?” with, like, way more excitement in her voice than she should.
“Not the point!” I shout as I slam my hands into his chest again.
But this time, he grabs my wrist and stops me, saying, “Can we please talk?”
I struggle in his grip, but he holds tight. I clench my teeth and spit, “Let go of me.”
He does. Immediately. Both hands up as if in surrender.
I decide to change my strategy. Because clearly Tyler Morgan is being Tyler Morgan. He attracts people to him like a siren song calling sailors to the rocks. He knows how to play up the act he perfected long ago. Seemingly genuine, charismatic, and fascinating as he leads the rest of us to our destruction.
So I pull the friend card out and whirl around to face Annie, Diane, and Caroline. Taking a deep breath, I say, “He’s not what you think,” in the calmest tone I can muster. My voice is shaky. My hands are trembling with anger. But I hold it together. “He ruined me,” I say. “He broke me into tiny pieces, dropped me to the ground, and walked all over me.”
Annie just stares at me, confused.
“What do you mean?” Diane asks.
“He left me, Diane. After Scotty died. He left me alone. He never came back. He never even showed up for his funeral. I begged him,” I say, starting to cry. “I begged him and he told me to stop. He just went on with his life like nothing happened. Like my brother didn’t just die the most horrific death possible. Like what we all meant to each other was meaningless. So I hope one of those stories he told you about our childhood included that little fact. And then…” I continue, drawing in a deep breath, willing the strength it takes to get this last part in so I can twist that knife in his chest the way he did mine. “And then he went off and made millions of dollars. Been living it up in a goddamned penthouse, no cares at all. No worries at all. While I’ve been back here…”
But I lose it there. I can’t say the words selling myself. Because I’ll die right now if I have to say that. I’ll die.
There’s a filled beat while everyone stares at Tyler, who never breaks eye contact with me. And I really wish he would. Because his eyes are sad and hurt-looking and no fucking way will I fall for that shit. No. Fucking. Way.
Caroline mutters, “He’s a millionaire?”
Jesus Christ.

Promotional Post: Child of Privilege.

CHILD OF PRIVILEGE
ROSS PONDERSON

BLURB:

Riding a bus bound for nowhere, nineteen-year-old debutante Dana Van Werner clung to hope, an unbreakable will, and a few hundred dollars.  Her nightmares clung to childhood memories of verbal and emotional abuse, terror, and physical violence at the hands of her father.

While she had escaped her gilded prison, lurking in the darkness was the “real world” of buses, sexual predators, jail cells, exploitation, and fleabag motels—survival skills seldom taught in finishing school.

She was also being followed by her father’s investigators: mercenaries competing for the bounty the powerful, deranged lawyer had placed on her head.

One thug in particular was obsessed with mixing pleasure with business.

Dana would endure a physical attack, robbery, arrest and incarceration, and an evening as a stripper in a seedy bar before finding refuge and love with a kindhearted deputy sheriff.

But abuser and survivor would eventually face each other again in a violent and climactic showdown, a confrontation that would tear open a lifetime of hidden scars.

This is an adult novel dealing bluntly with a contemporary issue.  However, it more importantly showcases a woman’s determination, courage, and strength in the face of devastating pain.

Come meet this remarkable woman and share her story.

EXCERPT:

The clear blue waters of Miller's Lake felt crisp and refreshing around Dana's bare feet.  Fortified by a stout meal, a hot shower, and a good night's sleep, Dana had spent the day exploring the picturesque farming community of Beckett Junction: from its historic railroad station; to the cluster of towering grain elevators on the south end; to the railroad branch line and siding that sliced to the south; to the small factories and light industries to the east; to the truck stop and motel and the Interstate 770 overpass to the north; the quaint downtown business district; and finally to the peaceful, tree-lined shores of Miller's Lake to the west.

The lake was over 1,000 spring-fed acres; its shoreline dotted with affluent residences, rustic cottages, and comfortable vacation homes.  With the onset of autumn, the trees hugging the shimmering lake burst forth in brilliant hues of red, orange and gold, the colors reflecting in the gently rippling waters.  Although the air was clean and invigorating with the season's characteristic chill, the water felt so refreshing and cool against Dana's tired, burning feet.

The pier upon which she sat was one of only a handful still jutting into the lake waters this late in the season, protruding from a cozy park a short walk from downtown.  This time of year the compact sandy beach was deserted, as was the swing set and playground several yards away.  An angled string of stacked picnic tables resembled a comic conga line from some classic old movie.

In her solitude, she wiggled her toes in the water and kicked her legs playfully.  The clear water foamed and splashed beneath her, moistening the cuffs of the jeans she had tightly rolled up nearly to her knees.

In the warmth of a late afternoon sun well into its descent into the western horizon, Dana faced the reality that some painful decisions loomed before her.  The prize money from Red's was rapidly dwindling and would soon be depleted with several more nights at the motel at the north end of town.  Then there was the decision about leaving town to remain ahead of her father's detectives ... and where she would go from here. She knew Reavis Macklin must've surely been debriefed by this time, her father gaining precise information on her whereabouts.  Soon his people would be in Beckett Junction itself searching for her.

In a town that size, there weren't many places to hide.

But there was also the exhaustion beginning to haunt her, a fatigue deep in her bones from four long weeks of buses, cheap motels, fitful sleep, rushed meals, and continually looking over her shoulder in fear.  Dana wrestled with the pangs of a longing to settle down, to once again put down the roots she had torn from the toxic soil of North Briarwood.  Four long, lonely weeks on the road had taken a toll on her mind and body.

She yearned to call someplace "home."

Her brooding was interrupted by a dog barking nearby on shore.  She spotted a sleek black Labrador retriever galloping onto the pier and ambling curiously toward her.  His claws clicked sharply on the weathered wooden planks.

He approached her inquisitively at first, sniffing curiously around her.  She began speaking softly to him and petting him gently.  He returned the affection by enthusiastically wagging his tail and licking Dana's face.

"Looks like he's made a new friend."

Surprised by a sudden male voice, Dana saw Greg Parmenter standing nearby.  Wearing a red plaid flannel shirt, khaki pants, and hiking boots, he could've passed for an ad in some outdoors magazine.

"Are you following me or something?" she shouted from the pier.

Using her question as an invitation to join her, he shuffled onto the walkway and approached her.  "Hey, my buddy here takes me for a walk past here just about every day.  I have a cottage a little ways down the road."

"I didn't ask where you lived," she said sharply.  She paused for a moment.  "I'm sorry.  That was rude."

Greg nodded his acceptance of the apology.

Dana gently stroked the dog's silky black coat.  "What's his name?"

"Whitey."

Dana did a double-take at the jet-black canine.  "Whitey?" she asked quizzically.

"Hey, don't blame me.  He's not mine.  He belongs to a neighbor, an old guy who can't always get out to walk him.  So, Whitey and I sometimes go cruising together looking for girls."

Dana laughed.  "Thanks for the warning."

Greg eased his muscular form down onto the pier next to her.

"Why don't you join me?" she asked sarcastically.

He countered with a syrupy smile, "Thanks, I already have."

"Dana, can I ask you something?"

She turned away from him and surveyed the lake.  "I know what you're going to ask," she said softly, "and it doesn't have anything to do with you.  So, don't bother, okay?"

"What are you running from?" he asked sincerely, ignoring her request.  "And what's the deal with your father?"

She kept her attention focused on the distant eastern shore of the lake.  "Something you don't want to get involved with," she answered distinctly.  "So, just let it go, okay?"

"Not everybody in this world is out to hurt you.  You may find this hard to believe, but there actually are people out there who would like to get to know you, be your friend, and just enjoy being around you ...  myself, for one."

He waited for some sort of reaction from her.  There was none.  He sighed deeply.  "But you just won't let anyone get close, will you?"

Dana pulled her jacket tighter around her and shivered a little.  The sun was nearly gone by now and a definite chill was settling by the water.  She pulled her feet from the water and hastily slipped on her socks and shoes.  "I'm getting cold," she said quickly.  "I think I'll be getting back to the motel."

She stood up and quickly brushed past a confused Greg Parmenter.  "It's 6 blocks away," he called as Dana strode back onto shore.  "I can drive you."

"No thanks," she answered.  "I just got the sudden urge to walk 6 blocks."

Greg quickly stood up and called to her.  "Dana, there's a restaurant next door to the motel.  It's called the Country Kitchen.  Meet me there for breakfast, will you?  Eight o'clock?  Okay?"

"Yeah.  Sure," she shouted back.

Dana started a brisk pace back toward the little motel by the freeway overpass.

Review: Bacon Pie

Bacon Pie Bacon Pie by Candace Robinson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Having read and enjoyed Candace Robinson’s earlier work – Quinsey Wolfe’s Glass Vault, Hearts Are Like Balloons, and The Bride of Glass – I was interested in seeing what her next book would bring. As soon as I saw the synopsis and cover of Bacon Pie my mind decided this was going to be one super cute read.

Despite how cute it seemed, I had my usual moment of tentatively regarding a cowritten book. Most cowritten books I have read have flowed really well together, but it’s the bad ones that stand out to me – due to this, I always fear the worst. Add in the fact I have never read a Gerardo Delgadillo book before and I was doubly nervous. What would I get from Candace Robinson working with an author I have never read before?

Turns out, it was yet another of those cases where the prior bad left me with unnecessary worries about the good. Candace Robinson and Gerado Delgadillo work really well together, leading to a story that flows wonderfully as we make our way through the story. It also left me with the desire to jump into other Gerado Delgadillo books.

I will be completely honest, I wasn’t completely sucked into this one at first. It took me a few chapters, where I was interested but not crazy in love, before I finally fell into the rhythm of this one. This may be a reflection of how I’m not the biggest reader of young adult contemporary. I enjoy young adult novels, but I lean more towards fantasy and science fiction for the genre; I enjoy contemporary, but I lean more towards new adult and adult contemporary over young adult. Thus, it’s a bit of a grey area for me – something I pick up occasionally, but not something I spent a lot of time reading. I think it just took me a while to organise my mind so it recognised I was reading something I do not read all that often.

Once I was sucked into the story, though, I could not put this down. It quickly became a book I was happy to sit and read in a single sitting, curious to see how everything came together. Being a book that covered so many important topics, I was unable to turn away until I knew how every detail played out. When I say it deals with important topics, do not worry about a book that preaches or shoves far too much in your direction – it subtly deals with the topics, making them important points of the story without waving a giant flag that says ‘this is something you need to keep in your mind in everyday life’. It’s wonderful when young adult books are able to incorporate such things, especially when it is done so in a way that it does not feel forced, when it feels completely natural within the story.

The storyline itself was a lot of fun. There was plenty of drama and entertainment throughout, the story having enough to keep you turning the pages. There are some of the usual things you find in young adult contemporary novels, but there’s also plenty to make this book unique.

The characters were also enjoyable. There was one side character I really wanted to strangle – not one of the troublesome ones, either, one of the important ones. However, by the end of the story he had grown on me and I could deal with him in small doses. That in and of itself is an amazing feat – to turn a character from someone I could not stand to someone I could deal with in so few pages.

Overall, I had a lot of fun with this one. It’s certainly worth reading if you’re a fan of young adult contemporary books, if you enjoy drama, romance, and bacon. Even if you’re not a fan of bacon – or, like me, you’re indifferent and cannot understand the obsession – it’s worth the read for the entertainment the bacon aspect of the story brings.

Review: Before I Let You Go

Before I Let You Go Before I Let You Go by Kelly Rimmer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Kelly Rimmer’s Before I Let You Go intrigued me from the moment I read the synopsis, leaving me wanting more. When it came around to picking this one up, I was more than willing to dive straight in.

From the very first page, this one sucked me in. It’s a book that deals with a heavy topic in a wonderful way, bring to light so many details. It gets you thinking about aspects of addiction you may not have thought about otherwise, sucking you into the story and leaving your mind running through the possibilities even when finished.

It’s not just a book that leaves you thinking, though. It also has a wonderful storyline, one that has you turning the pages at a rapid pace to see how everything plays out. You will have expectations and notions in mind, yet you will continue to turn the pages as you wait to see exactly how it plays out. With so many elements involved in this story, with so many things touched upon, you will be desperate to receive all the details.

Despite giving this a three-star-rating, I would label this one a three-point-five-star read. The reason I decided to round down was because of the information to emotion ratio. I love a book with a lot of information in, when it is clear the author has researched the topic. However, with this one, I felt as though there were times that we were buried under all the information and it covered up the emotional aspect. It was a book with lots of emotion, but the pacing was slowed when we were receiving a lot of information and at times this interrupted my emotional connection. Hence why I rounded down instead of up with my rating.

Overall, this was a great book – very much worth reading if you’re looking for an intense read about addiction.

Review: A Little Spark

A Little Spark A Little Spark by Amy K. McClung
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I love a good enemies-to-lovers romance, and the added twist of the female lead being a firefighter meant I was all over this one. I went in expected to be wowed, expecting to adore this book, and it seems I expected too much.

Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy this one. It was a quick and enjoyable read, one I was able to get through in no time at all. I was interested by the characters and events, and was more than happy to keep turning the pages. That being said, it didn’t wow me. It was enjoyable, but it did not blow my mind. In other words, it wasn’t quite what I had expected it to be.

I think the biggest issue I had is that the story was not as developed as I would have liked it to be. The enemies-to-lovers aspect felt forced, rather than the developed intense feelings on both ends of the spectrum that we all like to see. Some of the details seemed to go by quite quickly, throwing us straight in rather than allowing us to watch how things develop.

I think, had this story been longer, allowing for a deeper look at certain aspects, I would have given this a four-star rating. As it stands, it was a three-point-five-star read that I opted to round down. It was fun, but I would have liked a wee bit more from it.
