Title: One Night
Author: J. Akridge
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: October 21, 2020

BLURB

Tessa

I’m 21. One-night stands are supposed to be normal at this age right? Go to a bar, pick a hot guy, have a little fun and then you run. Or at least that’s what I thought, until my first and only one-night stand ended up being the night I got knocked up by a stranger I had never laid eyes on before. Sure, he was the perfect guy for the job. He was sexy in the way that attracted every female within 100 yards of him. His voice was smooth, and he knew exactly what to say to get into my panties, clearly. Eye roll.

I wasn’t on birth control. Now I’ve peed on two sticks and they both say the same thing. Those two little lines have changed my future forever. You want to know what the worst part is? I have no idea what the name of the father is.

Kyle

I’m a bachelor. I never sleep with the same woman twice, I like variety. But when she walks into the bar, she takes my attention immediately. When she agrees to leave with me, I've hit the jackpot. Then I run into her in my sister's office, the last place I expected to see her. I never thought I'd see her again.

Except this time, she has something to tell me. Something that will change my world forever. Our one night together, turned out to be so much more.

Title: Twisted Fate
Series: Dark Heart Duet #2
Author: Ella James
Genre: Dark New Adult Romance
Release Date: October 21, 2020

BLURB

I thought he was the white knight. Looking back, it makes sense. I was young and needed saving. Luca was my strength. He could take on anything—the world, for me. They say first love cuts the deepest. Ours became a blade that bled me out. It turns out I didn’t know a villain when he held my heart in his hands. Now it’s darker—more like his.

Elise was my whole world—until my world burned, and I destroyed her with me. Some betrayals, you can’t undo, no matter how much you wish you could. I can’t help who I am now, and why would I want to? I run this city. No one’s going to take me down—not even the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. I heard they’ve got a file eight inches thick on Don Galante. But dodging bullets is my business. They play dirty, but there’s no one dirtier than me.

The DA learns the hard way who’s in charge; he’s out. It should be time for celebration. There’s just one problem: his heir. Or should I say heiress? Elise O’Hara wears a crown of lies, a gown of red, and a fat diamond on her left hand. Now it’s me and her. Or her and me. Only one of us will be left standing when the story’s over.

This is how you write a tragedy.

*Twisted Fate (formerly known as Dark Heart Volume 2) takes place 15 years after Dark Heart and should be read sequentially.

Review: Season of Zoetica

Season of Zoetica Season of Zoetica by Jennifer Arntson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Season of Zoetica is the final season of Scavenger Girl, and I was desperate to see how everything came together. Through Atchem, Talium, Hytalia, and Toridia, I’ve been hooked on the world and my investment in the story has grown stronger. There are so many things in this series that I adored, and I needed answers to how everything played out.

There is no doubt that a lot happens in this one. It’s one of those cases where I could list everything, but then I’d be spoiling the twists and turns that play out. Just know more happens than expected. I went into this one with a few ideas of what would play out, only to be given so much more. We were shown parts of the world that we’ve wondered about, parts of the world that have been hidden, and went deeper into the areas we love.

As for the characters, they continued to grow. Choices are made that will have you frustrated, choices are made that will leave you grinning, and all choices are real. In fact, the choices that were made had me amazed at how circular the series is. I had ideas of some of the details coming into play, but I had not expected to be wowed by the ending to the degree that I was. It was more than I expected, and I’m disappointed we’re now at the end of the series. Not because it did not end well, but because I need more.

Without a doubt, Season of Zoetica is a must read for fans of the Scavenger Girl series. It gives so much, ensuring you cannot put it down, and you’ll be eager for more of the world when it’s finished. In fact, there are certain characters I’m desperate to see get their own stories, if only to give me insight into what happened next – something I would love to see more of.

Honestly, if you’ve yet to dive into this hidden gem, you need to do so.

Review: The One That Got Away

The One That Got Away The One That Got Away by Karina Halle
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I positively adored Luciano in The Forbidden Man and was desperate to dive into his story. In truth, I think I went into The One That Got Away with too high expectations because of this fact. Although I enjoyed this one, I didn’t love it quite as much as I had hoped for.

The One That Got Away is a story that shows how love is never easy, how people make mistakes, and how we will always find a way. It hit hard in places, but I never quite felt the overpowering connection between the characters that I had hoped for. I enjoyed them together, I was hooked on their story, but I kept waiting for something more to happen – for that connection to grow stronger, for my investment to overpower me, for me to suffocate under the love I’d imagined when reading The Forbidden Man. Despite not quite loving it as much as I had hoped for, I was still hooked on the story.

All in all, The One That Got Away was another addictive read from Karina Halle. I would not label this my favourite from the author, but it’s well worth the read for a messy love story.

EXCERPT

Prologue

Script 24923.135:
“You wake up like it’s any other day of the week. You get ready for work. You scarf down a handful of berries, nuts, and lemon water. Pancakes or anything remotely processed hasn’t been an option all year. You’d get sick from even a lick of syrup. The doctors are confounded, haven’t been able to come up with a diagnosis yet. Oh well, at least you get to stay in shape.
Like always, you log in at work, the OSA, on time. Such a good girl. You start your task with your colleagues, well, friends. Laura, a fireball of fun, yet also the amazing friend that would break into your house to save your sick ass and take you to the hospital just because you ate one cheese puff. The other friend being Abiola, the sweet pragmatic one who keeps you grounded.
You’re sleepy. You head to the sleep pods to take a mid-day nap. A handsome face slips in through the darkness behind your eyelids.
Korin.
An abduction… You brush it off as an abnormal dream and head back to work. You don’t know this at the time, but he’s a catalyst. Another one. He changes your life forever.
Every day, the life you have built for yourself drifts further away, a reality that becomes meaningless in exchange for a love that feeds into your new reality. A love that rips apart your loneliness.
You’re dealt a new card.
A surprise baby. No, not his, but one of his doing. Make a choice.
A, die to give life; or B, be reborn to give birth. Or C, abort.”
“Okay. You’ve decided to be transformed into an alien… right.
You unofficially marry the handsome Korin, and he plans to take you to your new home planet Miez, where he’ll make a pretty little home for you. A garden, with exotic flowers. A quaint art studio with windows that overlook a waterfall…
You’re dealt a new card.
You’re right at the doorstep of your new life, a bright interstellar portal a million miles away from Earth. You watch as hovering guards arrest and take Korin away as you are dragged in the opposite direction. A former catalyst. A former lover cuts your happily ever after short, before it has even started. In the upcoming days, you’re due to wake up in a cell on Earth. In a new body, with potential powers that would make the toughest human shudder. But you’re trapped.
Make a choice.
A, opt in; or B, opt out.
Note: no matter the choice you make, remember this… We all think we’re free.”
…A

Chapter One

Just magical.
I exhaled, thoughtfully trying to relax my muscles as the stinging sensation of each needle greeted my skin. Though I had my eyes shut, I tilted my head ever so slightly and blinked. I refused to let the tears gathering at the corners of my eyes fall.
“Clench your right fist,” a nurse disrupted my seething.
I did what she instructed without much thought. I couldn’t give a crap about what was happening around me. All I could think of was hate, in its purest form. Up until this point, I had conceptualized it, bottled it up and shelved it in the corner of my mind. I had no idea how heavy it would feel coursing through my blood.

“I like challenges. I thrive on them.”
She sipped her wine, but he didn’t miss the way her pulse thrummed in her neck. There was more to the lovely Rebecca than met the eye. She was beautiful, and she surely knew it, but she had an innocence about her that was completely at odds with her seeming worldliness. He was intrigued.
“Will you dine with me, Rebecca?”
She looked startled. And then she smiled softly. “I would be delighted, Alejandro. Thank you.”
He stood and she gaped up at him, confusion written on her features. He held out an arm. “I have a private dining room in my suite. We can talk uninterrupted, and I will ply you with the best food and wine in Madrid. There will be servers present,” he added.
She unfolded herself from her chair and slipped her arm into his. “Thank you for saying that,” she said as he led her toward the elevator. “I feel as if I should apologize for insulting you, however.”
He ushered her inside and slid his key into the card reader. “I’m not insulted, querida. It’s wise of you to consider who you spend time alone with, especially when it’s a man you’ve only just met.”
“I’m glad you understand.”
“I do.” He wasn’t going to say what he was thinking, but then he decided why not? “You should know that I intend to get you into my bed, querida. Willingly, of course.”
Her laugh was surprised. “You waste no time, do you, señor? Another man would at least get me a little drunk first.”
He liked the sound of her laugh. “I’m not like other men, Rebecca. And I believe in saying what I want.”
She leaned against the elevator wall opposite, her hands behind her as she gripped the rail. He had a brief vision of stopping the elevator and making love to her against that wall, but he wanted her in his bed the first time.
“And if I don’t want to sleep with you?”
He arched an eyebrow and grinned. “You will.”
“You are very certain of yourself,” she said with a touch of frost in her voice. But the pulse in her neck betrayed her, as did the widening of her pupils. She was as attracted to him as he was to her.
“I know my quarry. And I never fail.”
Her eyes sparkled. “Well, I suppose we’ll have to see, won’t we?”
The elevator rocked to a stop and the doors opened. “,” he told her. “We will….”

STRONG, BRAVE AND COURAGEOUS CHARACTERS.

**Write something worth reading**

I'm Margaret and I'm a self-published author.

Recently I was fortunate in obtaining New York Times best-selling status on my YA/NA book - Ugly, and my YA book - Mistrust.
My last six books have been YA and I'm completely in love with the genre. I love being able to communicate with people through my words and stories.
My writing genres all differ, but the one thing I keep consistent is my heroines. All my female lead characters are strong, gutsy and not the 'perfect' woman. While my books all have romantic elements in them, they aren't just about the romance. They're about finding strength, acceptance and making life long connections.
I hope you enjoy my stories as much as I have while writing them.

EXCERPT

I keep my eyes on the man as I start my engine, but he never removes his attention from the water. I back out of my spot and intend on speeding away, but a few loud thuds have me pulling over just before the exit of the lot. This isn’t happening. George barely raises his puppy head as I get out of the car and walk around inspecting the tires. The muscles in my neck give out, and my chin falls to my chest. A flat fucking tire. With the light fading fast, I pop the trunk and get to work.
I was taught how to do this a long time ago, but I’ve never actually had to do it by myself before. I grunt and groan as I try to loosen the lug nuts to no avail.
“I’ll do it.” At the sound of the deep voice, my hands slip from the wrench and I nearly hit my forehead on the car. Who in their right mind would walk up to a woman and startle her like that? I don’t bother looking up and continue to struggle with the nuts.
“Have you ever seen what a lug wrench can do to the human skull?” I ask. If I’m going to get killed, it will be because of my damn mouth.
“You don’t want to know what I’ve seen.”
“You’re right, I don’t.” The muscles in my face tighten as I strain against the wrench again.
“Wow. You’re a peach. Step aside. I’ll do it.”
The audacity. I spin my head around only to be confronted with the man. The man. Statue man. And he’s just as intimidating up close as he is far away. He rubs his scruff on his jawline before sliding his hand through his short brown hair.
“I…uh…” Stumbling over your words, Dani? Don’t show weakness. I clear my throat and stand as tall as I can. Though my tallest stretch has nothing on his towering stature. “I can change a damn tire. I can do a lot of…things.” Jesus.
His right eyebrow raises, and a smirk crosses his face. He pivots on a heel and walks back to the parking lot. I push hard on the lug wrench as the roar of an engine comes close, then purrs to a halt right behind my car. I glance over my shoulder as statue man walks to the front of his black Challenger and leans against the hood. With his leather jacket no longer in sight, his black T-shirt reveals his forearm muscles bulging amongst the protruding veins as he crosses his arms across his chest. It’s hard not to stare. Or drool.
“What are you doing?” I ask.
“Position the lug wrench so you can step on it.”
“Excuse me?”
“For small asses like you, you’ll need to put all your weight on that wrench to get those off. Or I could just do it and we can both go home.”
I sarcastically laugh as I listen to his tip and position the wrench so that I can step on it. “You can go home. I’m a big girl, and I can change my own goddamn tire.”
“Okay, Peach. Change it.”
“I will.” He narrows his eyes and waves his hand toward the tire. “You can leave.”
“I ain’t leavin’.”
“Why not?”
“Have you looked around?”
I glance at the empty parking lot and the stillness of nightfall in the trees. I groan and turn back to the tire, working faster at loosening the nuts. I guess I can appreciate that he’s making sure I’m safe out here. I’m always a little on edge when it comes to men. For good reason. But I don’t think he deserved my attitude.
I push my hair nervously behind my ear. “I’m sorry. You’re just trying to help.”
“Don’t apologize.”
Statue man stays against his car while I work on changing the tire. Every time I risk a glance at him, he isn’t watching me. His attention seems to be on the area around us. He tosses out a few more verbal instructions before I tug on the wrench and tighten the last nut on the spare. I lower the jack slowly, and his black shoes appear on the ground next to me.
“You did it,” he says.
Standing, I pick up the jack. “Did you think I couldn’t?”
“If I didn’t think you could do it, I would have pushed harder to do it myself.”
I try to hide the bashful smile I can’t control. “Thanks for the tips.”
“You’re welcome, Peach.”

Review: Tarnished Empire

Tarnished Empire Tarnished Empire by Ava Harrison
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Tarnished Empire is a story that gripped me from the start, one that had me devouring the story in a single sitting. There were some characters that I think were in other books by the authors – and if they’re not, I hope they get their stories – but you can read this without any knowledge about these characters.

Tarnished Empire was a story with a lot packed into it, one that had me gripped in many ways. There were a few details that I easily predicted, but it was not enough to lessen my enjoyment of this one. I was curious about all the details, I was invested in all that played out, and I could not get enough of the characters. Each new detail sucked me in deeper, and I couldn’t put it down.

Without a doubt, this is a story that packs a serious punch.

Review: The Bribe

The Bribe The Bribe by Willa Nash
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Bribe is the first book in Willa Nash’s Calamity Montana series, and it was a story that had me seriously hooked. I was pulled in from the very first page, and happily powered my way through this one in no time.

On the surface, The Bribe is a sweet small-town romance. Although that is certainly true, there is much more to the story than first appears. There are plenty of deeper elements that come into play, ensuring you’re gripped on every aspect. From the musician falling for the sheriff angle to the soft mystery surrounding circumstances of a hidden celebrity, this one had me eager for more. Add in all the fun of the side characters, and I’m eager for more of this town.

Without a doubt, The Bribe has guaranteed I’ll be back for more of Calamity Montana.

Andrew sighed and rolled his eyes. “It’s my writing notebook,” he said finally. “I’m working on the novel.”
I raised my eyebrows. “Yeah?” I asked. “You figured out the love scene?”
He shrugged. “Yeah.”
“So what happens?”
“The main character falls in love with a girl he knows is unattainable.” He moved closer and reached for the notebook. Gently, he pried it loose from my hand but stayed close. His eyes were fastened to my lips, making my mouth tingle at the possibility. I could imagine it now: Andrew pinning me up against the wall, running his hands down my sides, squeezing my hips, murmuring his approval at my curves. His kisses would rain down my neck, just a whisper of his tongue to my skin as I clutched his arms. He would nuzzle me at the base of my neck, right at the collarbone. My heart would race in anticipation of what could come next; the world would stop spinning on its axis as he tracked my breath passing through my lips, tasting my skin, gently biting the soft lobe of my ear. And then finally, finally, his mouth would consume mine. Possess it.
My heart, finally slowing down after being tickled, picked up its rhythm again at the possibility of being kissed like I was revered. My watch beeped, but I ignored it. “She’s getting married, but he’s been captivated by her since they were younger. It was never the right time for them. Until now.”
“Oh?” I said, my voice muddled with panic and unexplainable longing. “Why now? After all those years?”
“Well, that’s kinda the guy’s fault.” Andrew traced an imaginary pattern on my arm and I shivered, unable to shake the vision of him pressed against me. My back arched slightly, and I hoped Andrew didn’t notice. “He might have tried to dissuade her a while back. He didn’t trust that she was what he was looking for. So she moved on.”
“How does she find out about all this?”
“See, it’s a funny thing,” Andrew murmured to my lips. “She can’t just find out. That would bore the reader. She has to come to that conclusion, and the readers have to see it unfold. It has to be part of their journey together. As friends, but also as something more.” When he paused, still watching my mouth as if it held a secret, heat pooled between my legs. “So while they’re off on their quest, he does some things to help her along. Because she’s kinda dense about this stuff.”
“What does he do?” I breathed. I could see my own chest in my peripheral vision, rising and falling rapidly with the quick pace of my breath. Andrew’s eyes flicked downward, made a leisurely stroll past my lips, and then up to my eyes. I braced myself against the wall.
“He seduces her, of course.”
“Of course,” I squeaked.
“I could let you read the book, if you want. So you can see what I mean.” Andrew’s face was so close to mine that I could feel his breath mingling with my own. One of his forearms bracketed my body; the other rested on my shoulder as he played with the curls around my face. I wholeheartedly wished for Andrew to develop telepathy so that he would know how much I wanted him to sink his hands in my hair and consume me. Somehow, the notebook disappeared. I didn’t know how, nor did I care. “But I have a feeling that you already know what that’s like. An unexplainable longing.” He bit his bottom lip as he whispered this in my ear. I sighed like the hussy I was. “Missed opportunities realized.”
“I don’t think I need to read the book for that,” I whispered. My mind blinked offline, overwhelmed by Andrew, but some part of me registered that we were too close. And definitely not talking about fictional characters. And definitely in the danger zone. Despite this, doubt flooded my body, whispered in the ear that Andrew’s voice didn’t occupy. There’s no way that he feels that way about you. Especially not after all that has happened. It’s been too long, and you’re so different now.
But as I looked past Andrew’s lips, so close to mine, and looked up into his eyes, I saw it. Unbridled desire stampeded across his face, made it an open book. Like mine. His lips were so close. I closed my eyes and tilted my face up, ready to let the chips fall where they may.
