Review: The Forever Song

The Forever Song The Forever Song by Julie Kagawa
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Forever Song is the final book in Julie Kagawa’s Blood of Eden series, and it’s safe to say it is my favourite of the three books. In fact, it’s bumped up the last two books in Julie Kagawa’s Talon series on my to-read list, as I need to know if the other series I’m reading from the author ends on the same kind of high this one did. Honestly, it was such a solid ending to the series.

Recently I’ve been diving into a lot of series that are incomplete, and I needed something complete to give me that satisfied feeling you get when everything comes together. Hence why I decided to dive into the Blood of Eden series, being more than willing to power through the three books. I’m so glad this one finished with a high, as it finally filled up the empty space that had been growing within from all the open endings I’ve been surrounding myself with.

As the Blood of Eden series spent a long time sitting on my to-read list, I was glad to find I enjoyed The Immortal Rules when I finally worked my way around to it. It wasn’t quite all I had hoped it would be, but it was a great read. I didn’t quite enjoy The Eternity Cure quite as much, but the ending left me super excited for the conclusion. Although things in The Forever Song did start off a bit slow, by the time we reached the end I had been won over in so many ways.

When you reach the final book in a series, you always have a lot of things you wish to see happen and a lot of questions you want answers to. With The Forever Song, I received those things. There was a lot more action in this one, which I adored, as I’d been waiting for some serious fighting scenes to play out. The romance, surprisingly, won me over (I’m not a crazy shipper of the couple, but I did come to appreciate them in the end). There was character development – and even the character who had grown to annoy me in the prior book was enjoyed in this one. There were answers to questions, we got to watch as things came together, and the world continued to build so well. There was emotion to be experienced, both the good and the bad.

All in all, this book gave the necessities of a strong final book. I think I may have to go and give the prequel a read now, just to get that bit more of this world.

We were supposed to be strangers. It was supposed to be a one-time thing.
Now the mob wants me to be her bodyguard, and make sure no one touches her.
…Oops.

The Marines taught me to fight and to be a man. But life as an enforcer for the mob taught me to get my hands dirty. There’s no job too rough for me. That is, until I meet the new assignment.

Fiery red hair, sweet curves that that melt me, and a sass that makes my blood run hot. I’m supposed to be Quinn’s bodyguard. The only problem?

We’ve met before.

Oh, we’ve met alright – one night, no names, nothing held back, when I claimed her as my own. Rough, hard – exactly how she wanted it. Her hair wrapped around my fist and her moans etched across my brain.

My boss, the vicious head of the Moretti crime family, thinks she’s his. He thinks he can lock her away in some tower like a little bird in a glass cage and claim her as his own.

He’s about to learn how wrong he is.

Because Quinn might be beholden to him, but she belongs to me. I’ll guard that body alright, and I’ll burn down heaven and hell to make sure they all know that she’s mine.

Please note that while a connected storyline, each of the Dirty Bad Things books are completely standalone stories centered around one couple, with no cliffhangers or spoilers.

Dirty, filthy, and oh-so-sweet, with an utterly obsessed alpha hero, explosive insta-love, and enough kindle-melting steam to make you sweat. Get ready to get wrong in the right kind of way. As with all my books, this one is safe, with no cheating (trust me), and a HEA guaranteed.

Review: The Eternity Cure

The Eternity Cure The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Eternity Cure is the second book in Julie Kagawa’s Blood of Eden series, and it was an enjoyable second book. If I’m being completely honest, I didn’t enjoy this second book quite as much as I had hoped, but it was a fun read. If nothing else, it left me extra excited to dive into the final book.

My introduction to Julie Kagawa came through the Talon series (which I really need to finish), yet the Blood of Eden series is the one that had caught my eye the most often. Being partway through both series, I can see the parallels starting to form between the two. In particular, I’m questioning whether Julie Kagawa had a particular formula she follows in regards to the male love interest. It seems to me that a very similar thing played out with both series, and I cannot help but question if the same thing will happen when I finally work my way around to reading The Iron Fey series. Such is just a thing I’m questioning, and I will not dig too deep into it, otherwise my review will move away from what you care about.

As a second book in a trilogy, The Eternity Cure does well to move the story forward and point us towards our ultimate goal. I feel as though there were times when the romance overshadowed the fun of the action, but I was able to deal with it. I may not be shipping the couple, but it was not as bad as I had feared it would be when it became clear this second book was going to focus upon developing the romance plot.

There was plenty of action throughout, and so much was opened up in these parts of the book. I really enjoyed the way the big evil developed throughout this story. We got to see so much more of the world, too, and came to understand things better. This was something I had hoped for in the first book, so I’m glad we got more of it.

I am a bit disappointed in one of the characters, though. One of the characters I expected to enjoy a lot in this one actually ended up being a bit on the annoying side. In so many ways I should have loved the character – he demonstrated may of the traits I tend to enjoy in characters – yet I found myself growing annoyed with him at points, wishing he would shut up and stop it with the commentary.

Overall, an enjoyable second book. I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as I enjoyed the first book, but it set up the final book really well.

Review: The Devil's Star

The Devil's Star The Devil's Star by Jo Nesbø
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Devil’s Star is the fifth of Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole series, and by this point in the series I believe it is safe to say I’m not a crazy fan. I’d heard so many good things about this series, yet I’m finding they’re just okay reads for me. I’m continuing to read them as I brought a collection, giving me the first seven books in the series, but after that I doubt I will be continuing on. I can see the appeal, but these stories are not blowing my mind in the way I had hoped they would.

Although I’m not crazy about this series, I was excited to dive into The Devil’s Star. Since book three, there has been an underlying story, lingering details I have wanted to see come together. I went in with the knowledge that there was resolution in this book, that things were finally brought together, and I was excited to see what played out. After all, the underlying stories that interlink books in series are one of my favourite things – I appreciate a good standalone crime thriller, but when these standalone stories are linked by tiny nods you’ll only understand as a continuous fan I find myself extra pleased.

If I’m being completely honest, the way things were resolved in this one was rather anticlimactic. I had been expecting so much more from this one, I had expected a lot more drama, and things seemed to come together much easier than I had thought they would. With the way the prior book ended, I expected there to be so much more than what we were given. In reality, things felt rather tame in this one in regards to the continuous story arc I had found myself rather invested in.

That being said, the crime in this one was one of my favourites in the series thus far. I love a good serial killer read and this one certainly had me turning the pages to see how it all came together. I may not have been completely content with how the continuous arc was brought together, but I was content with the standalone crime of this novel.

Overall, another okay read in the series. I do have book six sitting on my shelf, yet I believe I will wait a wee while before diving into it.

Review: The Immortal Rules

The Immortal Rules The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Julie Kagawa is an author who manages to grab my attention on a regular basis. The Blood of Eden series has been on my to-read list for as long as I can remember, the book begging to be read from the moment I stumbled upon it. The Iron Fey series also caught my attention, not to the same degree but there has always been the lingering interest. The series that most caught my attention, however, was the Talon series – as a big lover of dragons, it is no surprise that was the series I decided to dive into first. When Talon made it clear I was to be a fan of Julie Kagawa, I decided it was more than reasonable to dive into another of her series. Thus, I grabbed the series that has been demanding my attention the longest – the Blood of Eden series.

Combing two of the most popular things from my childhood and teenage reading years – vampires and dystopian societies – I had high hopes for The Immortal Rules. At the same time, there was a bit of tentatively. I’ve seen similar combinations attempted in the past, and it can be a bit hit or miss as to whether it works.

Although this one wasn’t quite all I had hoped it would be, it was an enjoyable read. It certainly had me turning the pages, leaving me intrigued and more than willing to dive straight into book two.

For me, my big issue was that there was never as much action as there could have been. This, however, reflects my feelings towards the first Talon book, and a part of me believes such is just the way Julie Kagawa tells her stories. The first book sucks you in with all the information and allows you to peak at the action and drama that is to come, but if you really want to experience it in full you need to stick with the story.

Fortunately, there was plenty about this story that ensured I would be sticking around for book two. There were plenty of characters I want to see more of, storylines I want to see through to the end, and many questions I need answering. As long as the second book gives me more of what I want – more action, a better understanding of the world, and a continuation of the intriguing storyline that is playing out – I will be plenty happy with the series.

Overall, an enjoyable read.
