Review: Butterface

Butterface Butterface by Avery Flynn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Avery Flynn is an author whose name I have heard on many occasions, with quite a few of my friends being a fan of her work. Despite the number of times I’ve heard the name, it wasn’t until I heard about Butterface that I decided to give one of her books a read.

The moment I found out about Butterface I knew I needed the book. It sounded like the kind of book I would adore, and I was more than willing to dive straight into the story. I went in expecting so much, with so many ideas in my mind, that it meant the story wasn’t quite what I had imagined. However, despite this, I had so much fun with this story.

It took me a couple of chapters to be pulled into the story, to come to believe in the chemistry between the two characters, but once things got moving I found the book impossible to put down. It was a book I had to finish in a single sitting, unable to pull myself away from the events that were occurring. I found myself constantly asking what would come next, desperate to see what new element would be introduced to the story.

I admit there were some predictable elements to this one, but there was enough entertainment thrown in that I was not bothered by the moments of predictability. I was lost to the characters and storyline, wanting more of the main characters and the side characters, more than happy to keep turning the pages so I received more of the good stuff.

The one thing I will say is that this book was not the rom-com I had been hoping for. It was enjoyable, there were a few amusing moments, but it was not the laughter-fest I had hoped for. Such has been the case with a lot of the books I’ve read recently that have been labelled as rom-coms, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to stop expecting laughter with such books. Either I’m setting my standards too high, or rom-coms are not as funny as they should be. Either way, despite the lack of belly laughing, I did have fun with this story.

There is no doubt in my mind that I will be grabbing the second book in the Hartingans series, as I’m more than willing to dive into more of this family.

Review: Deceptions

Deceptions Deceptions by Kelley Armstrong
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Deceptions is the third book in Kelley Armstrong’s Cainsville series, and it’s another wonderful addition to the series. There is no doubt in my mind that each book is getting stronger, sucking me ever deeper into the story, and leaving me addicted beyond belief.

This book started out strong and continued with the strength throughout. There was plenty introduced throughout this book, and all worked to leave me addicted to the story and curious as to where things would go next. In fact, of the first three books this was the most addictive in terms of the reveals that came to light.

I admit that there was plenty I’d already worked out in book two, with book three simply confirming my beliefs, yet there were elements introduced in this one that promise plenty for the last two books in the series. I could sit and list all the things I’d worked out, all the things that came as a surprise, and all the suspicions I have for the future, but to do so would be to give spoilers and ruin what is to come for those who have yet to read the book.

Just know, Deceptions brings a lot to the series. Things are coming together so well, and I cannot wait to see how everything plays out. I will admit there is one element I’m not crazy to see play out – the clear love triangle, the one thing I cannot stand in stories – yet Kelley Armstrong is doing it in such a way that I’ve yet to start pulling my hair out in annoyance. It may not be my favourite element of the story, especially when we can all guess how it will play out, but it is nowhere near as bad as it could be.

As ever, I’ve been left with the desperate desire to grab the next book. I’m both excited to dive in and fearful, knowing I’ve passed the halfway point and things will soon be coming to an end.

Butterface, a hot romantic comedy from USA Today bestselling author Avery Flynn, is AVAILABLE NOW!
2018-0627 Avery Flynn
Synopsis
Looks aren’t everything.
It’s true. I’m not what most people would call “pretty” and, well, high school was rough. Fast forward ten years and life is good…
Until a bunch of jerks think it’s hilarious to put the “butterface” (AKA me) on a wedding Kiss Cam with the hottest guy ever—and that old humiliation hits hard.
I recognize him immediately. The hottest cop in Waterbury and totally out of my league. But then he kisses me. And we totally forget the room, the crowd, everything. Then he tells everyone we’ve been dating for months.
Soon everything starts to feel too real, from adorable fights over “necessary” tools to fix my broken porch to surviving a free-for-all dinner with his six siblings to picking up where our last kiss left off.
But there’s something he’s not telling me about why he’s really hanging around, and I’m pretty sure it has to do with my mob-connected brothers.
Because this is not a makeover story, and Cinderella is only a fairy tale…

Excerpt:
“Do not disrespect the Kiss Cam, Hartigan!” someone bellowed out as the chanting crowd grew more restless. And louder.
“One quick kiss,” he said, his tone grim with a thread of something more vulnerable underneath. “Then, they’ll leave us alone.”
That’s when Gina’s gaze moved from her own face, blotchy with embarrassment on the screen, over to him. The tips of his ears were scarlet, and he was tapping the tips of his middle finger and thumb together like he was keeping rhythm for a ska band.
He was hiding it better, but the reality was he wasn’t enjoying this anymore than she was.
Glancing from the screen to the actual man himself, her lungs tightened. He was a big guy, and she wasn’t just talking about his broad shoulders that filled out his tux to a mouthwatering degree. He had to have at least four inches on her own five foot ten.
He glanced down, making eye contact, and for a second they weren’t the hottie and the nottie. They were two people stuck in a completely socially awkward situation that they had no control over.
She nibbled the inside of her cheek and considered her options before deciding that Ford was right. A quick peck would get the videographer out of their faces and divert the boisterous crowd’s attention to another couple happier to indulge in this bit of insanity. Then, she could finish up the last of her duties and go home to her peaceful, if totally messy, mid-renovation Victorian.
She let out a shaky breath, not sure she was making the right decision. “Fine. A kiss. Whatever.”
Gina had barely gotten the words out when his large hands cupped her face, sending electric shock waves through her that made her lips part slightly with surprise. He dipped his head down—and he kissed her.
The roar of approval from the crowd faded to almost nothing when he seemed to groan involuntarily. Her body approved and made an answering sound of its own. At her encouragement, his tongue slicked across her bottom lip, and her mind lost all reasonable thought. Teasing her senses and sending her heartbeat into overdrive, she softened against him, practically melting against his hard, muscular chest. Somewhere in the back of her mind she registered that people were cheering. She just couldn’t for the life of her care. The world turned electric as the air practically vibrated against her skin as he deepened the kiss. His tongue swept against hers in a brief but oh-so-potent move that had her clutching his lapel before she’d even realized she’d lifted her hands.
Then, almost as soon as it began, he lifted his head and stepped back, breaking the connection.
Dazed, she released his tuxedo jacket and looked around, catching sight of herself on the giant screen. Her face was flushed and her eyes hazy. She pressed her fingers to her still-tingling lips. She looked like a woman who’d been kissed senseless, which made sense because that was exactly what had just happened.
About Avery USA Today bestselling romance author Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockeyaddicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip.
She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name.
Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.

  THE PEER
I have no intentions of becoming a happy family with the social climber and her wild daughter. A bottle of Jameson and a cracked skull gets my problem shipped to reform school, but I didn't bank on her returning. Sending her away won't be good enough this time. I'm going to have to tame the little troublemaker. To the girl across the hall, the one without a name, I'm nothing without my silver spoon. She's lady of the trailer park. Queen of the swamps. And my new favorite pastime.

Paige
I was weak.
After everything I’d been through, I’d grown weaker, not stronger. But I would change that. This was the year I’d lose myself, even if this meant losing Caleb—my rock. He was too close to the enemy, too close to do what needed to be done.
Alex Connor needed to suffer. It was the only way to stop him.
So, whatever it took, I would make him suffer and I would make him pay.

Caleb

It’d been the least possible thing in my life until now. But the freedom I’d wanted at first was nothing like the air I wanted to breathe with her. The moment I’d met Paige, she’d become my center, the core of my existence.
Although, when everything was said and done, I would never get to have my freedom. I would never get to revel in hope. I would become off-center, and I would fade.

Some years ago, Casey rediscovered her passion for writing and hasn’t stopped writing since. Her favorite genre is romance with a little angst, which is why she writes sexy, funny, sweet, and emotional stories that are a bit more in depth, but so much fun to read.

Casey has a ridiculously short attention span and loves her coffee and tea without sugar and milk. Apart from reading or writing, she loves to snowboard, even when she’s catching an edge and face-planting in the snow. She absolutely loves it!

M. Malone

NYT & USA Today bestselling author M. Malone lives in the Washington, DC metro area with her husband and their two sons. She holds a master's degree in Business from a prestigious college that would no doubt be scandalized by how she's using her expensive education.

Independently published, she has sold more than 1/2 million ebooks in her two series, THE ALEXANDERS and BLUE-COLLAR BILLIONAIRES. Since starting her indie journey in 2011 with the runaway bestselling novella "Teasing Trent," her work has appeared on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists more than a dozen times.

She's now a full-time writer and spends 99.8% of her time in her pajamas.

Nana Malone

USA Today bestselling author Nana Malone's love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense novel she "borrowed" from her cousin.

It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She's been in love with kick-butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination constantly channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.

While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as brazen and kick-butt as she thinks she is.
