Review: The Difference Between Somehow and Someway

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After reading and adoring the first book in Aly Martinez’s Difference trilogy, The Difference Between Somebody and Someone, I was eager to dive into the second book. With a cliff-hanger that had me desperate for answers, it is no surprise I devoured The Difference Between Somehow and Someway in a single sitting.

I’ll be completely honest and say that a part of me feared this would suffer from second book syndrome. The first book gripped me hard, and I was worried the second book would be a short filler book before everything concluded in the final book. Although this was a short read, one I completed in a couple of hours, it was far from a filler. In fact, this second book introduced so many new elements. We get more from the past, the present is filled with question, and there is uncertainty for the future. Each element pulled me in deeper, leaving me trying to put the pieces together. Although I worked out some of them, there were details in the ending I did not work out – and those left me desperate for the next book.

Without a doubt, this was a wonderful addition to the Difference trilogy. I cannot wait to dive into the third book to find out how everything comes together.

Review: Wicked Heat.

Wicked Heat Wicked Heat by Ella Frank
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After enjoying the Dare to Try series from Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine, I was eager to dive into more books from both authors. As I’ve previously read and loved The Unforgettable duet by Brooke Blaine, I decided Ella Frank would be the one I’d dive into first. With the Chicago Heat series following characters we were introduced to in the Dare to Try series, I knew Wicked Heat would be my first stop.

From the start, Wicked Heat had me hooked on the story. I quickly fell for the characters and adored the way things played out. There were plenty of interesting elements, details that I wanted to dive deeper into, which left me turning the pages at a rapid pace to see how everything developed. Although I feel many of the details did not come together until the end, it was not enough to take away my enjoyment of this one. I loved the characters, I loved the possibilities that were introduced, and I have high hopes for the way everything will be tied together in the second book.

All in all, a wonderful read that has ensured I cannot wait to dive into the next book.

“What about you, Doctor? Do you have any dark secret cravings?”
Her question catches me off guard. I do have a dark craving. A secret I’ve had for the past couple of months. One she can never know about, because I could lose my medical license. Not to mention it could end with a big fat restraining order against me.
I look back at Charlotte, and my mouth goes dry. Her skirt has ridden up way too much, showing the black strap to her garter belt. Did she lift it higher on purpose, or does she not realize she’s damn near flashing me?
I laugh internally at the irony of that thought.
Fuck my life.
I clear my throat and meet her eyes. “We all have secret desires.”
She lifts a brow. “Have you ever acted on them?”
I incline my head. “Yes.” Too many times to count, I silently add in my head.
“Hmm… interesting.” She props her elbow on the arm of the chair, one of her slender fingers rubbing along her bottom lip. “Care to tell me what those desires are?”
One side of my mouth tips up. “Have we reversed roles here, Charlotte? Are you now the doctor and I the patient?”
Charlotte looks gorgeous no matter what expression is on her face, but when she flashes me one of her flirtatious smiles, I swear to Christ the world around us ceases to exist. All I see is the curve of her luscious lips, and my only thought is how sweet they would taste.
“Maybe I’m just trying to get to know you better. Find out what makes you tick.” She drops her hand to her thigh, and my question from a moment ago is answered when her eyes stay locked on mine as she not so subtly slides her skirt up an inch. I try to keep my eyes away, I really fucking do, but it’s no use. “You know so much about me, but I hardly know anything about you.” She licks her bottom lip, teasing my control. “I’m curious what secrets you hold. What your desires are. What tempts you.”
She’s all of those things. She’s my dirty little secret, my naughtiest temptation, and my desire for her grows every fucking week she walks into my office. I often wonder how much longer I’ll be able to hide my attraction to her.
I move my notepad to the center of my lap, hiding my growing erection. From the smirk tipping up her lips, I have no doubt she knows the state she’s putting me in.
“You’re not paying me to know my secrets,” I tell her, the rough edge to my voice just another clue giving away my state of arousal. Charlotte’s always been a bit of a flirt during our sessions, but she’s upped her game today. “Why don’t you tell me about your most recent experience?”
I should be shot in the goddamn head for asking that.
What in the hell are you doing, I ask myself? Apparently, I’m really into self-torture.
