Review: Bird Box

Bird Box Bird Box by Josh Malerman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Bird Box has been on my to-read list for far too long. With all the hype surrounding the story, I’ve been curious since I first stumbled upon it. Although I was curious, I was a bit nervous.

The first point of nerves came from the potential I would find this one to be overhyped. The second point of nerves came from my lack of enjoyment of the author’s Black Mad Wheel. Nevertheless, I remained curious and was happy to jump in.

Although I enjoyed the story and powered through it, I had been expecting a wee bit more from this one. It was addictive and left me turning the pages, but I was never as invested in it as I’d hoped to be. I think a part of this comes down to the fact my expectations were set so high. Everyone seems to adore this one, and I was ready to have my mind blown.

Yes, I enjoyed it. Yes, it was an addictive read. However, it wasn’t all I’d imagined it would be. It’s not a story that is going to linger with me now I’ve finished. It’s one I can say ‘yes, I’ve read that’ and that’s it.

I’m glad to say I’ve finally read it, but I’m not quite buying into the hype.

Review: The Red Zone

The Red Zone The Red Zone by Amie Knight
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After reading and loving Amie Knight’s Stars Duet, I knew I needed more of the author’s work. The Stars Duet blew my mind, and I was eager for more. Although I have a couple of the author’s backlist on my Kindle, The Red Zone was the one I jumped into first. After reading and loving The Red Zone, I’m even more desperate to go back and read everything the author has previously written. In other words, it seems I’ve become quite the Amie Knight fan.

I’m going to be honest and say I went into The Red Zone expecting a very different kind of story to what I was given. I do not mean this in a bad way, however. I mean this in a good way, a very good way. The book surprised me in the best way possible and I happily devoured it in a single sitting. Once I started I could not put it down, as the story gripped me so hard.

Although The Red Zone is a romance, it’s so much more than that. It’s a story of life, of the way we deal with the curveballs thrown our way. It’s a story of how we’re connected, of how we can help each other. It does all this without sounding preachy, whilst making you both smile with laughter and cry from the heartbreak. It’s a story that tugs at your emotions, giving something more than your standard second chance love story.

With wonderful characters and an equally wonderful storyline, the book grips you throughout. I could write so much about all the wonderful things touched upon in this story, but I have no wish to ruin the impact. Just know, it’s a story that does more than you expect it to.

Without a doubt, The Red Zone was a wonderful read.

Excerpt

PROLOGUE
River / Present / 23

The velvet caress of silk sheets against my bare skin leaves me hyperaware of what I’ve done. Early morning sunlight slips through the cracked blinds and kisses my exposed back, coating the room in soft pinks and yellows.
Steady, rhythmic breathing sounds from behind me. In, out. In, out. It’s a melody that makes my muscles lock, too afraid to reacquaint my eyes with every dip and curve of chiseled muscle displayed inches away.
His natural musky scent wraps around me, overwhelming my senses until my heart thumps wildly in my chest. It doesn’t take away the memories of lingering touches, gentle kisses, and an overpowering sense of belonging. And less than twelve hours ago, I belonged to Everett Tucker in ways I never thought possible in the ten years of knowing him.
His touches scorched me.
His kisses burned me.
And his body…
The mattress dips with the shift of his weight. I hold my breath, waiting to see if he’s awake. When his soft snores echo in the half-empty room, I release the breath and white knuckle the sheets against my breasts. Carefully, I sit up and squeeze my eyes closed like it’ll soften the blow of reality.
I wait for the pounding headache or quake of unavoidable nausea to punish me, but my conscience reminds me of what I already know. I wasn’t drunk last night. What I’ve done can’t be blamed on alcohol.
My hand drags across my bare neck until my heart thunders in pure panic over my missing possession. I swallow my anxiety when I catch the silver chain resting on the night stand and remember the very moment he took it off me.
Nothing but skin. That’s what he said he wanted between us. I’ve only taken this necklace off to shower and sleep. It goes everywhere with me, the silver paint palette and brush charms sweeping over my heartbeat as a reminder that he cares. But in the moment I had him as more than a wish, a hope, a dream, he didn’t want it lingering.
Nothing but skin.
My fingertips touch the newest charm, a cracked heart, and I suck in a short breath when the contact shocks me. Clenching the sheets tighter to me, I turn slightly to peek through my peripheral and see a tussle of dirty blond hair against my starch white pillow case.
Look, my conscience taunts. Look at him.
Slivers of tan skin make their way into my sight as I shift, my gaze drifting up the mountain of hard muscles that form his toned biceps as they wrap around a pillow. Worrying my bottom lip, my heart summersaults in my chest when the curve of his square jaw comes into view. The sharp line of it is coated with early morning shadow that he’ll shave despite preferring a thin layer of stubble.
He looks peaceful when he’s sleeping; the hard edge he normally radiates eased to a laxed slumber. From this angle, I can see the faded white scar that stretches from the bottom of his left ear along the curve of his throat, landing just above his pulse. You wouldn’t know it’s there unless you know the story, and he doesn’t tell just anybody.
But I’m not just anybody.
Especially not now.
My throat tightens from the emotions lodging in the back of it as I scope out his sculpted body. He works hard for every muscle, spends countless hours in the gym or training at the fire department, and it shows. The man sleeping beside me has been a figment of my imagination that I’ve conjured thousands of times, but his body is a masterpiece I never could have perfected unless I saw it in person.
I absorb the memory of his body spread on my mattress, bare to me. Every vulnerability laying in a mess of sheets, open to pull apart and dissect and regret when the sun fully rises.
Less than twelve hours ago I belonged to the minty eyed boy I’ve loved since I was thirteen. But Everett Tucker isn’t mine to love.
He stirs when I rise from bed.
“Everett,” I whisper brokenly, my heart shattering inside my chest. I can feel the pieces splintering apart as I choke out my final words. “We made a mistake.”

Review: The Collapsing Empire

The Collapsing Empire The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Collapsing Empire is one of the most difficult books I’ve rated in a while. It’s a solid three-point-five-star rating, and I had a huge debate as to whether I rounded up to a four-star rating or down to a three-star rating. In the end, I opted to round down. Although I rounded down, it was a very hard choice to make.

The Collapsing Empire grabbed me from the start, sucking me in deep and leaving me desperate to read the rest of The Interdependency series. There was so much to enjoy, and I cannot wait to see how the series comes together. With a great storyline and quirky characters, this one had me powering through the book. I was hooked in all the best ways and could not put this one down.

Although I was addicted to this one and had a lot of fun with it, there was something that kept me from loving it in the way I had hoped. I kept finding myself hoping for that little bit more – hoping for that little bit more action, that little bit more insight into the ‘bad’ of the story – and this is why I opted to round down instead of up. It was a great story, but it wasn’t quite everything I had been hoping for.

Nonetheless, I will be grabbing book two to see what happens next. I need to find out what comes next for this series.

Review: Wicked Games

Wicked Games Wicked Games by Vivian Wood
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Wicked Games appealed to me the moment I stumbled upon it. There was so much that suggested I would love it, and I was happy to dive into this one and devour it.

Unfortunately, it’s one of those cases where the book failed to live up to my expectations.

Wicked Games had the potential to be a wonderful read, yet I fear things were too undeveloped for me to ever fall in love with the story. There were numerous individual elements I should have loved, but I feel as though nothing reached the point I wanted it to. Things often felt like they were introduced then spoken about later, only we never got to experience the happening and developing of these elements. It made it difficult to enjoy these things when I never felt like I was getting to see them.

Add in the fact I did not care about any of the characters and I was indifferent to the whole thing. Even the mystery element of the story felt flat to me. It was cliched and obvious, and I was disappointed by how easily everything came together.

I think another thing that made it difficult for me was the number of inconsistencies in the story. I know I read an early copy, but the number was much higher than I’m used to. I really hope they’re all fixed by the time the final version goes out, as they were really distracting. I mean, there was one point where it gave us someone’s birth and death as 1997-2018 and in the very next sentence it said they were eighteen. It’s really obvious things like that, meaning I spent more time in proof reader mode than in pleasure reader mode. Not that I let such things impact my rating when I read an early copy of a book, but it was so obvious with this one I had to mention it.

Overall, I’m sure Wicked Games will appeal to many, but it wasn’t what I had been hoping for.
