“I will breathe for you.”

Some people’s bodies are built to run marathons. Others to lift and labour. And some are made so graceful their footsteps are barely heard.
My body was built to be a vessel. It was always built for you.

Maybelline Connors knows stars are not always as faultless as they appear. She knows life is not permanently concreted into its foundations, and love can last a lifetime … even when a lifetime is shorter than one hoped.

May has only one thing left to fight for: her baby. And when the man you love’s heart is breaking, it can be hard to find the beauty in those stars you once adored.

With life there is love … and with love there will always be life.

Excerpt

There is no breeze when my stiletto hits the footpath. The air is stale and lifeless. Like me. I slip each foot out of my shoes and hang them from my fingertips. The path is scorching against the flesh of my soles. I’m not sure why I do it—it could be because the path is far too hot for my skin to bear, or it could be because this is a natural act for me, but I run. I run flat out. Running has always alleviated my tension—it’s probably why I started training for this stupid half-marathon in the first place. My handbag slaps at my sides as my feet pound against the tar. Running usually supplies contentment in my life, but right now I feel numb. There is no contentment—no nothing. Maybe if I run far enough away then I won’t have cancer anymore.

Darting in front of a car, I inhale harshly as I wave my apologies before entering a children’s playground on the opposite corner to the medical centre. Children swing freely. The sound of innocent laughter fills the air. The green grass instantly cushions my boiling feet. I stare at its brilliant colouration when my head drops and my hands grasp my knees.

“It’s okay. Breathe,” I tell myself, trying to slow each breath.

Without warning the grass slowly fades to a haunting grey. I flick my head upwards and my body follows suit. The swings bearing the weight of small children suddenly morph into aged tombstones. This once beautiful playground becomes ugly, as I see only an eerie cemetery. I try to escape the sudden changes, and step forward. My lungs seize, causing me to cough hard, and I gasp. I attempt to inhale air, but it’s not entering my body like it should. A stampeding herd pummels my chest, buckling my torso over, folding me in half once more.

“Breathe, May,” I whisper, right before my legs give way. I fall heavily upon my knees as salty tears flow steadily from my disbelieving eyes. Finally, I draw a needy mouthful of air only to release it again in an injured howl.

Please don’t take my life.

Review: Runner

Runner Runner by Patrick Lee
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Patrick Lee’s Runner, the first Sam Dryden book, has me conflicted. On the one hand it was an addictive read, one I powered through in no time at all. On the other hand, it never quite wowed me in the way I had been hoping for. There is no denying I was hooked, at the same time it wasn’t what I’d expected.

With Runner, I got serious Reacher vibes. It felt like a Reacher book with a bit of a techno-thriller twist. Although the Jack Reacher books are a guilty pleasure of mine, Sam Dryden felt like a bit of a cheap imitation. There was action and he always had an answer, but he wasn’t Jack. With Jack Reacher there’s that little bit more, that edge that is uniquely Reacher, that makes Sam Dryden feel like a child in comparison.

Although I didn’t come to enjoy Sam Dryden as a character in the way I’d hoped, the storyline was interesting. I love a good techno-thriller, and this one is done in such a way that it almost feels paranormal in nature. It’s not, but such is the vibe that comes across at some points. It keeps you hooked, curious to see how everything comes together, and has plenty to entertain throughout.

I may give the second book a read, but at the moment it’s not at the top of my to-read list. I’m interested, but I’m not going to go out of my way.

Review: Avalon Wishes

Avalon Wishes Avalon Wishes by Alexa Whitewolf
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

With The Avalon Chronicles, Alexa Whitewolf has given us an Arthurian tale with a twist. In the first book, Avalon Dreams, we were introduced to characters other than those you would expect to follow in an Arthurian tale. The known characters are present, but we do not follow them closely in the way you would normally expect. With Avalon Wishes, we go back in time and get to see the expected story of Arthur.

I’m going to be honest and admit to having a hard time deciding upon a rating for this one. It was a solid three-point-five-star read, and I debated whether I would round up or down. It was personal preference, a small pet peeve (that I will explain later in the review), that had me rounding down. Despite rounding my rating down, I did enjoy what this second book in the series gave us.

With Avalon Wishes we get the history for side characters, finding out how their stories play into the larger story told in Avalon Dreams. Through these stories being told, the world grows much bigger. From gods to fae, we get to see so much more than we were given in Avalon Dreams – which is something, when you consider how much Avalon Dreams gave us.

Split into three parts, we get to watch the stories develop and intertwine across time. You’ll fall deeper for some characters, you’ll grow to hate some characters, and you’ll be hoping for more stories about certain characters. It’s a very character driven story, filling in blanks and giving us more of the world.

My pet peeve, the reason I rounded down, is in relation to how this one plays in with the storyline we already know. We get to see events from the first book again, but I feel there wasn’t quite as much added to it as I would have liked. The fact I read the books so closely together made it feel as though I was re-reading the same segments. Although it was important to see these elements again, I would have preferred to see them from a new point of view or to have them kept to the periphery. That’s very much personal preference though and was not enough to deter from the story. I remained hooked throughout, and happily devoured the story.

I’m now desperate to dive into Avalon Nightmares to see how everything comes together in the end. There is so much I’m eager to see more of and have high hopes for the ending.

Review: Wonder

Wonder Wonder by R.J. Palacio
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

R.J. Palacio’s Wonder is a book I spent a lot of time on the fence about. It sounded okay, but it didn’t scream out to me. Add in the hype, and I was worried. In the end, however, I decided to give it a read. Yes, it’s well after the hype has ended, but better late than never.

Although Wonder was a quick read, I was never wowed by it in the way other people were. My rating isn’t quite a full three-star rating, but there were enough emotions felt throughout to have me rounding my rating up. Despite the fact I wasn’t crazy about this one, I’m not entirely sure what my issue with the book was.

I think, mostly, it’s simply a case of I’d been expecting more. There’s a great message in this book, but I’d expected something more from the story. I enjoyed what I was given, but I was never obsessed by it.

Overall, okay for a quick read, but I’m not buying into the hype.
