Review: Frightfully Ever After

Frightfully Ever After Frightfully Ever After by Nick DeWolf
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After enjoying Nick DeWolf’s Pulling Strings, I was desperate for more of the author’s wonderful storytelling. Thus, I eagerly jumped into Villains Never Die. Villains Never Die blew my mind, and I knew I needed to read the other Nick DeWolf book available. Therefore, I entered Frightfully Ever After with high hopes.

Sometimes, when you enter a book with high hopes you’re disappointed. Frightfully Ever After was not one of those incidences.

I confess, Frightfully Ever After is not my favourite Nick DeWolf book. Villains Never Die my favourite Nick DeWolf book. Nevertheless, Frightfully Ever After is a wonderful read. It’s no surprise Nick DeWolf is an author I will read no matter what. He has a way with words, a way with storytelling, and each book is a delight. Add in the fact Frightfully Ever After was his debut, and my love for Frightfully Ever After increases.

With Frightfully Ever After, Nick DeWolf combines numerous things in a mind-blowing manner. We have a new take on several fairy-tale elements. We have a dark world. We have a unique urban fantasy feel. We have fabulous bad guys. We have twists and turns. We have characters you’ll love. We have characters you’ll hate. We have countless layers.

In other words, Frightfully Ever After gives us so much.

At the start, I thought I knew where this story was going. I expected an interesting take on fairy-tales, I expected something slightly disturbing, only to be mistaken. The book got better and better, more and more was added, and each chapter provided us with something more. It’s a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat in the best possible way, ensuring you’ll be turning the pages at a rapid pace.

Without a doubt, Frightfully Ever After is another wonderful example of Nick DeWolf’s imagination. I cannot wait to get my hands on more of his work – he’s an author I’ll follow anywhere.

Review: Rogue Scot

Rogue Scot Rogue Scot by Tammy Andresen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rogue Scot is the fourth book in Tammy Andresen’s Brethren of Stone series, and another fun read for fans of the author. This one is an even quicker read than the prior books, but it is still an enjoyable read.

As with all Tammy Andresen books, this was quick and enjoyable, with plenty packed into the story. We have great characters with great chemistry, we have some drama, and we have more of the characters from the prior books we enjoyed so much. In truth, this was not my favourite book in the series – it’s more of a three-point-five-star read than the four-star rating I gave it – but it was a lot of fun.

It was also an unexpected read with the promise of another book. A part of me is questioning whether it works with the timeline we have been given, with the information we’ve received in other books, but as these are guilty pleasure reads I’m willing to overlook it. After all, I’m super curious to see how the final book plays out after this one.

Overall, another fun Tammy Andresen read.

Everyone has secrets. Although, I was a master at concealing mine. But part of hiding was deception, and I’d become a veritable Pinocchio.

He was like two different people—Eli and Dr. Paxton. While I knew the latter would turn out to be an incredible teacher, the idea of Eli being more threw me for a loop. I couldn’t separate the two, and it seemed vastly inappropriate and strangely alluring.

The practical side of me needed to win the war inside my mind. I had to please the teacher, not the man. But once I'd cross that line, there was no turning back.

For either of us.

Series: Off Balance #3
Author: Lucia Franco
Genre: Sports Romance/Forbidden Romance
Release Date: May 2, 2019

Blurb

After Kova’s devastating betrayal, Adrianna must become her own champion and place her Olympic dream ahead of all else. In doing so, she ignores the warning signs as both the extreme training and unending heartbreak begin to take their toll.

There is no atoning for what Kova did. The vow he made cannot be undone. With boundaries set and lines clearly defined, Kova will now have to be the one to relinquish control in order to regain Adrianna’s trust.

Though the dynamics shift between coach and gymnast, nothing can prepare them for the agonizing truth that is to come. Fighting for a dream becomes only half the battle when Adrianna’s fate is sealed, leaving them both with their biggest challenge yet.

** Author note **

Much like a student-teacher novel, the Off Balance series is a highly forbidden romance story between a gymnast and a coach. If you find this genre of novels to be not to your liking in any way, shape, or form, this series is not for you.
This novel is purely fictional and does not reflect on real-life events. Gymnastics is a hands-on sport that involves many hours of close contact with an instructor. My main goal was to focus not only on the beauty of the sport in detail, but also what goes on behind closed doors and how working with a coach for nearly forty hours a week can evolve into something more. This story is meant to push you, to take you outside of your comfort zone. I hope you take the plunge with an open mind before making judgment.
The Off Balance series is intended only for readers 18 years of age and older. Reader discretion is advised.

Review: Kiss Me Tonight

Kiss Me Tonight Kiss Me Tonight by Maria Luis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Hold Me Today, the first book in the Put A Ring On It series, was a wonderful read. I was left desperate for the second book, desperate for more of a certain character, and happily jumped into book two the moment I managed to get my hands on it. Kiss Me Tonight, the second book in the Put A Ring On It series, is another winner from Maria Luis. I’ve been left desperate again, in need of the answers to how the third story plays out, and will devour book three the moment I get my hands on it. All in all, Love Me Tomorrow cannot come soon enough.

With how much I loved book one, with how desperate I was for this book, it should come as no surprise to know I devoured this one. Once I started reading, I could not stop. I was hooked, addicted, and could not get enough.

I confess, at the start I was a wee bit tentative. Although the story was fun and I enjoyed the characters, I was not as lost to their chemistry as I was to the chemistry in book one. However, the story had plenty of other things to keep me gripped, and I was happy to continue reading. The more I read, the deeper in I was sucked. The more I was sucked in, the more in love with the chemistry I found myself. It may not have hit me from the very start, but it developed throughout the book and had me hooked by the end.

In fact, there were plenty of times when I was wearing a stupid smile on my face. There was more than just a great romance with this story, and all the different elements hooked me. Without a doubt, it’s a great second book in the Put A Ring On It series.

If you enjoyed book one, you need to give this one a read!

Excerpt

“Don’t.” It was a single word, but it carried a wealth of meaning.
Miss Grace blinked, tipping her head just a fraction of an inch. “Pardon?”
He shook his head slightly. “Don’t. I know what you are thinking, and it’s wrong.”
A bit of the spark he’d seen earlier flared to life in her eyes, and it pleased him. “I wasn’t aware you were a mind reader.”
“I’m not, but I am quite intuitive on certain things, and this is one of them. You’re thinking you don’t belong, that you knew you’d do something stupid like this, and that you are disappointing Heath—Viscount and Lady Kilpatrick.” He finished, lifting his chin, daring her to contradict him.
Her defiant gaze flickered to the ground and he noted the way her jaw clenched. There was a slight sigh before she raised her gaze to his. “Am I wrong to think those things?”
He mentally applauded her willingness to be honest. “Yes. While it was unfortunate for you to . . . do whatever you did. I rather missed the whole mess, but only you can let it define you, Miss Grace. And I, for one . . .” He took a step closer to her. “Rather thought you stronger than that.”
He issued the challenge, offering the opportunity to rise to the occasion rather than offer sympathy.
Sympathy was for fools, for those too weak to accept the challenge of rising above. And was quite certain that Miss Grace needed the gauntlet thrown, rather than a soft word and kind pat.
         Like a pet Yorkie.
Ramsey gave a slight shiver at the thought.
“I just made a cake of myself,” she retorted with enough heat to warn him, but not loudly enough to draw attention.
         “I know.”
“And yet, you want me to waltz right out there—”
“I wouldn’t waltz if I were you; that might draw attention. Most people simply walk, but . . .” He hitched a shoulder.
She glared, clearly not appreciating his attempt at humor.
Ladies were so irritatingly literal when they were angry. Annoying, that.
“Well, what are you going to do? Hide? Let them win? Cower? I guarantee that is exactly what they think you should do, and then they will whisper behind your back, and then to your face.”
“They’ll whisper regardless.” Miss Grace shrugged, giving a very unladylike eye roll to punctuate her statement.
Even if it was unladylike, Ramsey had to agree with the gesture. London elite had earned many an eye roll from him as well. “Yes, but the question is . . .” He took a step forward, met her gaze with a frank on of his own, and continued. “What do you want them to whisper about? How you ran, or how you had the bravery to rise above?”
Her green eyes sparkled, then kindled with what looked suspiciously like courage, but then she glanced down to the floor, hiding his view of her expression.
The first measures of the waltz started playing, and Ramsey turned to the ballroom, watching the dancers start to assemble in the middle of the floor.
Before he could second-guess his instincts, he held his hand out.
Miss Grace glanced from his hand, to his eyes, then back, her brows arching in a question.
“Or was I wrong? Are you not brave enough?” He challenged.
It wasn’t a second later than her hand was firmly placed on his arm, following him from the alcove into the room.
As they stood in the frame of the waltz and began to melt into the other swirling dancers, it was only then that Ramsey realized that he had given the London Ton something entirely different to whisper about.
         Himself.
