Review: Cast Iron

Cast Iron Cast Iron by Peter May
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Cast Iron is the sixth, and final, book in Peter May’s Enzo Files series, and to understand everything in this one you need to have read the prior books. Although it can be read without the prior books, a lot of the things will fail to have the intended impact without the prior knowledge.

The Enzo Files, if I’m being completely honest, is my least favourite series by Peter May. There have been some gripping moments, but I never fell for Enzo in the way I expected. There were too many things – specifically about Enzo as a character – that did not hold appeal, but I was interested in the overall storyline and wanted to see how the bet played out. For a while, this book tried to convince me my biggest fear for the series was going to play out, but it didn’t. In the end, it went for the resolution that was obvious from the start of this one.

As interesting as it was to see the details come together, this one was my least favourite of the series. There were too many cliches for me, and I found myself rolling my eyes at the pretty bow everything was wrapped in when we reached the end. I expected something bigger from the ending, something a bit more explosive. It was certainly interesting to see everything come together, but I had hoped for more.

All in all, fans of the series need to give this one a read to see how everything comes together. Although things come together well, it wasn’t quite as good as it could have been.

Review: Home

Home Home by Lyla Oweds
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Grimm Cases by Lyla Oweds is a series that has me hooked, and I was happy to dive into this novella to find out more. In fact, it was the perfect quick read to keep me hooked on the series.

Although I enjoyed this one, it is a story that creates more questions than answers. There are some insights that are nice to see, certain elements that I enjoyed watching, but there were no solid answers provided to overarching questions. Although this left me with more questions than answered, I was happy to devour it in a single sitting as I needed more of the series.

All in all, Home was a great quick read for fans of the Grimm Cases series. It’s not a perfect read – the thought processes did not read like the eight-year-old we were supposed to be reading – but it’s certainly a story that keeps you eager for more of the series.

Without a doubt, I cannot wait to continue with this series.

Review: Undivided

Undivided Undivided by Suzanne Falter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

If you have read and enjoyed the prior books in Suzanne Falter’s Oaktown Girls series, you need to give Undivided a read. It’s another addictive addition to the series, one packed with emotion and sure to have you devouring it in a single sitting.

Undivided gives us a look into the lives of all the women we were introduced to in the prior books, providing us with an insight into the highs and the lows of their lives. I’ll be honest and say I enjoyed some of the stories more – one in particular hit extremely hard, to the point where my eyes were watery as things played out – but all were addictive. It was great to see the friendship between them all, to see the connection help them through the intense events.

Without a doubt, fans of the series need to give this one a read to be hit hard by the emotional events that play out.

Review: Prince Charming.

Prince Charming Prince Charming by K. Webster
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Prince Charming is the second book in K. Webster’s Cinderella series, and I was desperate to read it after adoring Stroke of Midnight. After the cliff-hanger of an ending, I was eager to see how all the pieces would come together.

As with Stroke of Midnight, Prince Charming had me hooked from the first page and ensured I could not put the book down. It was one I happily finished in a single sitting, one that kept me turning the pages at a rapid pace. Although I enjoyed this one, I’ll be honest and say I wasn’t quite as hooked with it as I was with the first book. I think it’s because things were a bit slower at first with this one, with all the best stuff happening later in the book. There were so many elements I was curious to see, and it wasn’t until toward the end that they started to come together. Nevertheless, I was hooked throughout and cannot wait to see what comes next.

Without a doubt, Prince Charming is a must-read for those who enjoyed Stroke of Midnight. It’s another addictive read and is sure to leave you desperate for the final part of the story.

Genre: Standalone Rock Star/Age Gap Romance
Release Date: January 28, 2021

BLURB

“You’re perfect for this job, Claire. He won’t want to sleep with you. You’re not his...type.”

Dominic Cantrell has been famous almost as long as I’ve been alive, but he remains a dark, volatile mystery.

I know why I was hired to handle Dominic’s PR while he’s on tour. It’s not because of my experience—I have next to none. It’s because I’m safe. Plain, quiet, shy, with more-than-ample curves, I won’t distract him.

What I didn’t count on was Dominic distracting me instead. I shouldn’t be so drawn to him. He’s too old for me, too closed-off, and definitely too angry, but I’ve been a good girl for far too long.

Why can’t I be just a little bit bad, especially when my rock star fantasy is so willing to corrupt me?

Our fling has an expiration date at the end of the tour. No strings, no feelings, no heartbreak when it’s over.

I tell myself I won’t fall. But I don’t know if I’m built that way.

To say I survived the unimaginable isn’t exactly accurate, because I didn’t.
I’m alive.
But I’m not living.
I’m existing, clawing my way from one day to the next.
My only saving grace is my job as a police officer, and it’s during a routine traffic stop one evening when the threads of my isolated existence begin to unravel.
One glance from Quinn Harris and I feel like I’m dreaming. And the more chance brings us together, the more I’m powerless to stop the uneasy feeling that I’m losing control.
She stirs up thoughts of something new and unexpected—of a life I’m no longer prepared to handle.

I’m done with men.
I trusted my ex and he broke my heart.
But life doesn’t seem to want to follow my plan, which is evident the moment I meet Nolan Bennett.
He doesn’t score high on first impressions. In fact, he is downright rude.
But as we continue to run into each other, I start to see another side of him, and I can’t deny I’m intrigued.
Against my better judgment, I give him a chance.
But again, life will step in and take over.

EXCERPT

Beautiful weather used to enhance my good moods in the past, but seeing the sun shining brightly, high in the sky, and feeling the warm breeze on the side of my face as I drove only seemed to aggravate me. On the days when it was dark and gloomy, I felt harmony because my surroundings were reflective of the turmoil I constantly battled. I was more at peace when the world appeared desolate.
When I finally arrived at the address, I took a moment before I exited my cruiser, calling on whatever hierarchy there was in the universe to give me the strength to complete my task. It’d gotten easier over time to deal with the public, but I still struggled with the interactions, although no one ever detected such a thing. Most just categorized me as an asshole, and I was fine with the assessment.
Opening my door, I slid out of my seat and adjusted my duty belt as I rounded the back of the vehicle, flipping on my shades to shield my eyes from the blinding sun. Up ahead, I saw a woman standing in the archway of the complex. If she was aware of my presence, she didn’t show it, so I took the time to assess her, as I did everyone I came into contact with.
She was thin, approximately five-six with long dark hair. She wore a black skirt, white top, and black heels. On her left wrist was a silver banded watch. She carried what looked to be a laptop case on her right shoulder. The closer I approached, the more I was able to see more of her, but it wasn’t until she turned to face me that I realized I’d seen her before.
The prior evening, in fact.
Standing near her now, in the light of day, in a drastically different scenario, a pang of remorse washed over me. To say feeling bad was an oddity for me was an understatement. I hardly ever gave people a second thought, let alone harbored any sense of guilt about my interactions.
There was a chance she wouldn’t recognize me as the same officer who pulled her over last night. If that was the case, then I would remain as quiet as possible and get this over with quickly so I could get back to dealing with the rest of my day.
Any hope I had that she viewed me as a complete stranger died when her eyes narrowed into slits and the corners of her mouth turned down.
“This is just great,” she mumbled loud enough for me to hear, and I didn’t know if it was her tone or the blatant look of disgust on her face from having to stand near me, but a part of me that had been dormant for as long as I could remember flicked back to life during the unpleasant interaction.
The moment was fleeting, but I held on to it for as long as possible before it faded into obscurity. The snarkiness in her voice pricked my senses. Everyone else I encountered either left me alone completely or engaged me briefly, their tones restrained and cautious, most likely because of my body language: that and the constant scowl on my face.
But the woman standing ten feet from me piqued my curiosity, all while she treated me with an iota of disdain.
Now, if she’d only stop glaring at me, I could attempt to make amends for last night.

PLAYLIST

EXCERPT

Most women might have disliked that, but I adored it. I loved the glares he shot at male patrons in the restaurant, I loved how he moved his chair so that we were in each other’s private space. I loved the hand he clamped to my thigh, and the way he stuck close to my side as if I was precious to him.
I loved it all.
And I wanted more.
I felt like a flower who’d been left to grow in a shady part of the garden, and who’d just been repotted in a sunny spot. As if, at long last, I could grow massive blooms, blossom how nature intended.
The best part?
This was now.
When he barely knew me.
What would he be like when we’d been together a while?
I almost shivered at the thought.
Of course, he noticed.
“Are you cold?”
I shook my head, watching him watch me in the mirror lining the elevator.
“Then why the shiver?” A filthy smirk creased his lips as he turned to me. “Thinking dirty thoughts?”
“Maybe,” I whispered, peering up at him, aware that I was encouraging him and wanting nothing more.
Somehow, I’d triggered this caveman-like response in him and I wasn’t about to stop.
With that in mind, I let my coat fall open, revealing the deep V of my blouse and the skirt I’d rucked up slightly so that it was short enough to raise eyebrows, never mind dicks.
When his gaze dropped to my tits, I knew that I’d be wearing low necklines for the foreseeable future, if not forever. His nostrils flared at the sight, the bag the maître d’ handed him as we were leaving fell to the floor with a dull thunk, and he reached over, cupping one of them even as he was charging forward, tangling our legs together as he pushed me into the back wall.
His other hand dropped down to my thigh, and his fingers, callused and rough, snagged on the silk stockings I wore, before he found gold in the form of actual flesh.
“I didn’t realize you were wearing thigh-highs,” he rumbled, his eyes on my tits still.
His fingers worked the lacy top of the stockings as I told him, “I’m not.”
He froze, then his gaze drifted to mine. “You’re wearing garters?”
My smile was wicked. “You’ll have to find out, won’t you?”
A growl escaped him as he moved back so he could grab the hem of my skirt and drag it up to my hips. His nostrils flared again when he saw I wasn’t wearing panties, and when his gaze caught on the belt around my waist, that shaped my slim curves, and kept the silk fripperies from tumbling down, I felt the disturbance in the air—like a thunderstorm was rumbling overhead.
He was a constant surprise, so I should have expected him not to react how I thought he would, but when he dropped to his knees and urged my thighs apart, a shocked breath escaped me even as I complied with his wishes.
One hand went to my calf, and he encouraged me to prop my heel on his shoulder, which gave him more room as he went to work on me. His lips unerringly sought my clit, and I didn’t bother staring down at him, just watched him in the mirrors as he ate me out like he hadn’t just eaten.
Like he was starving.
And God, so was I.
In barely no time at all, I went from being as dry as a bone to slick with arousal.
I hadn’t a clue what it was about him, just knew that he could get me this hot with a glance.
My body was accustomed to being used for sex, but I’d never been an active part of the event. My mind skipped out on things as if it was self-preservation. I was used to being fucked, but fucking in return was a treat.
While I’d dressed with respectability in mind, I’d also picked clothes I knew would turn him on, never expecting that he’d turn the cards on me.
