Excerpt

I reminded myself of the bubbly pink thing in my glass and began pulling my hand toward my face when the cup was jerked from my grasp.
“Delicious,” Sean murmured as he sipped from the rim of my glass, lifting his eyebrows and grinning hopelessly. Is this real?
“Where did you come from?” I snapped. “What are you doing here?” The words fell out in accusation, but I was more surprised than anything. I stopped dancing and stared at him, tanned and gorgeous. His beard disappeared into delectable stubble. I had to stop myself from wanting to touch it, to touch him. His wavy hair was cropped, forcing my focus to his glowing emerald eyes which stared at me.
“Meeting Jesse. What are you doing here?” This creep owes me an explanation. Or does he?
“Come here.” I pulled on his wrist and walked with Sean through the gaping wall of windows that was open for the evening, blasted with heat lamps and fans. Sorry, planet. In the dim glow of the streetlights I observed Sean was wearing all black; dress pants and shirt, of course teasingly unbuttoned at the top with his cuffs rolled over his muscular forearms. I continued sipping from my glass, eyeing him suspiciously. I wasn’t sure what to say, how to feel, or if he was actually standing there.
“I thought you were still in Miami,” I pressed, taking a sip from my drink.
“I thought you’d be spending a Saturday night with your boyfriend.” His top lip rolled from between his teeth, jaw clenched, and eyes wild.
“Girls’ night,” I reminded him, smiling coyly. “When did you get back?”
“Tuesday.”
“You waited almost a week to tell me.” I swung at his arm playfully. “I’m hurt. I’m going back inside and you owe me a drink now that you’ve tampered with this one.”
I turned to walk back into the bar and I felt his fingers quickly wrap around my wrist and lift the glass from my hand. “I think you’ve had enough, Ave.”
My body warmed with his hand along the middle of my back as Sean guided me back to the booth. I was only on my second drink and resentful he thought it was his place to tell me I had enough. I had enough of his stupid, handsome face, that was for sure. I had enough of him the last time I saw him, when he left me alone. Shudder. I didn’t have enough then. Seeing him next to me, feeling his skin on my back, his eyes burning into mine, reminded me of how much not enough I had of Sean.
Ella and Lizzie were still dancing in the middle of the floor, leaving our booth empty. I noticed Jesse turn from the bar and gaze in our direction, his mouth spreading into a playful smile. It was one twisted reunion, and I couldn’t stop myself from attending.

Review: Power Play

Power Play Power Play by Maria Luis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My introduction to Maria Luis came through Hat Trick, one of the later books in the Blades Hockey series, and since then I have been meaning to go back and read the prior books. Finally, I have worked my way around to reading Power Play. Now, I cannot wait to dive into Sin Bin.

Power Play is the first of the Blades Hockey books, and it’s an exceptionally quick read. More of a novella, really but it was fun. Sure, it was predictable – it was clear from early on how the ending would play out – but it was sweet and brought a smile to my face. I would have enjoyed it even more if it had been a full-length novel, but it was a sweet introduction to the series.

For me, this was a great way to get to see another side to characters I’d already met. It gave me the background I was missing, filling in information. With a side of laughter, this short read was a perfect way to get more of the Blades Hockey series.

Without a doubt, I’m diving into Sin Bin soon.

Review: Providence

Providence Providence by Caroline Kepnes
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Caroline Kepnes caught me completely off-guard with You, offering a story that had me hooked throughout. In fact, it is one of those rare books where my rating was more of a four-point-five-star read rather than the four-star rating it was given, being close to the ever elusive five-star rating. The sequel, Hidden Bodies, was also enjoyable. It wasn’t quite in the same league as You, but it was another insanely addictive read. Thus, when I heard about Providence I was eager for another Caroline Kepnes read. I expected great things and was eager to have my mind blown.

Did I enjoy Providence as much as You? Sadly, I did not. Did I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed Hidden Bodies? Again, the unfortunate answer is no. However, despite the fact I did not enjoy Providence to the same degree as Caroline Kepnes two prior books, I did find myself strangely addicted to this one.

I think my issue is that this story wasn’t in the same dark and twisted league as You. It brushed against the darkness, it had the potential to be all kinds of twisted, but it somehow became a lust filled story instead. It wasn’t a romance, but it seemed as though it wanted to be. I have no trouble with romance novels – there are times when I go on crazy romance binges, and they’ll be all I’ll read for a couple of weeks – but in this case I was ready for the suspense and twists I know Caroline Kepnes is capable of.

Rather than the suspense and twists, I experienced yearning. The yearning the characters experienced seemed to hold back what could have been a fabulous storyline. Someone is kidnapped and comes back with a strange power? This strange power leads to the things that occurred throughout Providence? No spoilers here, but it should have been amazing. Instead, it was just addictive. I was curious, I was turning the pages, but I was constantly waiting for that something more.

I think You set my Caroline Kepnes standard a bit too high, ultimately leading to disappointment with this one. Sure, it was fun for a quick read; however, it wasn’t enough to blow my mind.

Nevertheless, I will certainly dive into whatever Caroline Kepnes brings us next.

Review: Fool's Errand

Fool's Errand Fool's Errand by Jenna Zark
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Fool’s Errand is the second book in Jenna Zark’s Beat Street series, and it was just as enjoyable as the first. As soon as I was finished with the first book, The Beat on Ruby’s Street, I jumped straight into Fool’s Errand and once again found myself addicted to the world.

In The Beat on Ruby’s Street we were introduced to a wonderful cast of characters and a great storyline, and Fool’s Errand provides the same thing. We get more of the characters we came to enjoy so much in the first book, and the storyline continues on from the first book. It’s not simply a continuation of our characters’ growth from the first book, it is more than that – it provides us with another unique story that gives us an insight to the time.

Like The Beat on Ruby’s Street, my knowledge of the time in which Fool’s Errand is set is rather lacking. However, the world was brought to life before me throughout Fool’s Errand, and in the end I found myself curious about the time and willing to do a bit of research. Add in the fact this is another wonderful young adult tale – another story that includes all the goodness of a coming of age novel – and you’re guaranteed to be hooked throughout.

Without a doubt, I’ll be willing to read more Beat Street books if more are released.

Review: The Beat on Ruby's Street

The Beat on Ruby's Street The Beat on Ruby's Street by Jenna Zark
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Beat on Ruby’s Street is the first book in Jenna Zark’s Beat Street series, and it’s a unique young adult historical fiction that had me hooked throughout.

Although I enjoy a good historical fiction, I find most of my reads can be categorised into two categories. We have the regency reads and we have the World War reads. I sometimes step out of these two boxes – I’ve read a few Cold War espionage novels, for example – but it is rare. Thus, my knowledge of the time period in which The Beat on Ruby’s Street is set is rather lacking.

Nevertheless, despite my lack of knowledge, The Beat on Ruby’s Street had me hooked throughout. It was both a great historical fiction novel and a great young adult novel. It brought the time period to life, sucking us into the time and providing information to make everything seem real. It included a lot of issues central to young adult novels, ensuring you’re sucked in for the journey.

Without a doubt, the first Beat Street book hooks you and leaves you willing to read more.
