The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The Lies of Locke Lamora spent quite some time sitting on my to-read list, but when I finally got my hands on the book I was overjoyed. I adored the book, and was more than willing to jump straight into the second book. Red Seas Under Red Skies proved to be just as addictive as the first book, leaving me empty and desperate for the third. Knowing there was to be a bit of a wait for book four, I held off on reading book three for quite some time, trying to limit my waiting time. In the end, my love for the first two books meant I was desperate to dive into the third.
Now I’m left waiting, joining the other fans in limbo as we wait to see what comes next. I constantly tell myself not to dive into fantasy series until they are complete, or at the very least near completion, yet I have zero self-control. Of all the series I’m waiting on, I think this may be the one I’m most desperate for.
For me, the first two books in this series were strong four-point-five-star reads. In fact, they’ve created what I refer to as the Locke Lamora Effect. It’s where a book is so close to being a five-star rating, where I’ll consider a book a favourite, but a small thing will hold me back from giving a five-star rating. Despite these small things, there is no doubt I adore these books. Thus, I had high hopes for The Republic of Thieves.
I will be completely honest and say this is my least favourite book in the series thus far. It was still a fun read, a four-star rating, but it wasn’t like the former books where the Locke Lamora Effect kicked in. This is a solid four-star rating, not the ‘and some more’ of the prior books.
Following the storytelling we were introduced to in the two prior books, The Republic of Thieves throws us back and forth in time as we watch two stories play out. One of Locke and the gang when they were young, and the other telling the dramatic effects of the present. Surprisingly, I was more interested by the past in this one.
I’m not a big fan of politics, but when done right in fantasy I really enjoy the topic. With The Republic of Thieves, we have an interesting take on politics. There is plenty of drama and backstabbing, with many of the usual Locke extremes, but I wasn’t as sucked into it as I had hoped to be. For me, the events of the past were more interesting.
I think, in part, this was because we were finally introduced to a character I had made huge in my mind. You guessed it, the love interest. Unfortunately for me, I was let down by her character. I found myself wanting things to move on whenever she was around, found myself wishing we could move away and return to the good stuff.
Despite how I wasn’t won over by this one as much as I was the prior books, I absolutely adore how much has been opened up for the future books in the series. We get glimpses at answers to the questions we have been asking for so long, with plenty more questions being thrown out there. These details were completely unexpected, leaving me in awe of the bigger picture Scott Lynch has created.
Without a doubt, I’ll be grabbing book four as soon as it is release.

Review: Valerie
Valerie by Charlotte Penn Clark
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Valerie is the third book in Charlotte Penn Clark’s The Carmichaels, and there is no doubt this is the strongest in the series thus far. The first two books were flickering around the three-star rating, whereas this third book threatened to be a three-point-five-star rating. There is no doubt this series is growing stronger the deeper into it I dive, and I’m excited to see how the final two books – Marie and Samantha – play out.
Picking up after the events which occurred in Daisy, Valerie throws us straight back into the lives of the Carmichael sisters. Whereas the prior two books have focused largely on being a romance with the family drama being secondary, Valerie seems to be much more of a family saga. There is still romance to be found – we follow the romance of Valerie in this one – but we also find out so much more about the family, with a lot happening with all of the siblings throughout this one.
If you have yet to read Corinne and Daisy, I would certainly recommend doing so before reading this one. Valerie builds heavily on information that came to light in the prior book, strengthening all we have come to know about the siblings thus far.
Following the formula of the prior books, Valerie is filled with plenty of drama and one dramatic event to make us stop and take a step back. Much like the prior books, however, I do feel as though things were much too quick and didn’t quite have the depth I would have liked – something I attribute to how these are novella length stories rather than novel length tales.
If you enjoyed the first two books, then you’re sure to enjoy Valerie – as I said, it’s the best thus far.

Malorie first started reading romance books when she
was twelve years old.
Her mother handed her a copy of Nora Robert’s Midnight Bayou and with resignation said, “Here you’ll love it, just skip the sex scenes.”
It was the only time she ever got to rebel as a kid, because after that day she spent her entire adolescence (and a lot of her adulthood for that matter) sitting inside devouring every romance book ever written.

Excerpt
As I unloaded my full carry basket onto the belt, I couldn’t
help noticing the man in front me who was wearing a charcoal gray suit. He was
attractive, but what instantly perked up my ears was his British accent. That
wasn’t something one often heard in this suburban town outside of Dallas,
Texas.
He was talking to the elderly cashier, who I knew as
Laverne, about lacking the identification necessary to buy the bottle of
champagne she was holding in her hand.
“You have my word I’m over the legal drinking age, whatever
that may be here in Texas.”
Laverne adjusted her thick glasses and shook her head.
“Unless you have some sort of identification proving it, honey, I can’t sell it
to you.”
He searched the inside pocket of his suit. “Unfortunately,
my passport is back in my hotel room. Is there any chance you could give me the
bottle now, and I could return tomorrow with my ID?”
Nice try, I thought, but then realized the words had
inadvertently slipped out loud. When his ice-blue eyes focused on me, my body
immediately responded. Because the eyes were only part of what made up his gorgeous
face, now turned in my direction.
Damn, David Gandy had nothing on his younger version, for
sure. The man’s mouth turned up in a slight smile towards me before he sighed
at Laverne, seemingly recognizing that her cataracts and sour expression made any
use of his charms a wasted effort.
Taking pity, I stepped up. “Hey, Laverne, how about I pay
for the bottle? I have my ID if you need it.”
She hesitated and then glared when Brexy, my new mingled
word for British and sexy, pulled out his wallet, probably to front me the
money.
“You keep your wallet and your cash where it is, honey. What
you two do in private ain’t none of my business, but don’t be doing it in front
of me. Rules are rules.”
Brexy and I exchanged arched brows at Laverne’s suggestive
way of putting it, but he stowed his wallet and said, “Understood. I promise
to, uh, finish this transaction in private.”
Now he was smirking. The expression suited his handsome
features very well. I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing out loud.
“Good.”
As Laverne scanned my items, she started chatting. “Making
snickerdoodles with the girls tonight?” She directed the question towards me.
“Yes. Sure am.” I noticed the man’s gaze flick over to my
left hand. Subtle he was not. Then again, neither was I. “My three nieces,” I
offered, feeling like an idiot for needing to clarify that point.
“You don’t need her identification, I take it?” he inquired,
making room for me to slide my credit card at the terminal in front of us.
Laverne tsked “I’ve known Peyton here for nearly the
twenty-nine years she’s been on this earth, so I’m quite aware of her age
without needing proper identification.” She handed me the receipt after bagging
everything and added, “She’s also quite single.”
And with that, she was moving on to the next customer.
I shook my head over her use of the word ‘quite’ in
front of single. Because ‘single’ wasn’t enough, she had to add the word
‘quite,’ making it sound as if I couldn’t possibly be more single.
Small towns. Gotta love ‘em.
