Title: Love by Design (Irresistible Billionaires Book 4)
Author: Ashley Bostock
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: May 14th, 2019

Billionaire CEO Zander Morgan hates to lose. To anyone. He also hates the fact that he is well-known for the architectural design app he created years ago and not for his more meaningful skills as an architect. This year, he is going to up the ante. The Architectural Award only comes out every three years and this year nothing is going to stop him from putting his name on it. With the designs he has for The Rink, he’s sure the award will be his…So long as he can keep his sexy little poker-playing opponent to stop her petition.
Jade Devereaux loves her job as a landmark preservationist. Preserving history is important for all generations—if only she could get her landlord to agree. Receiving notice that The Rink is going through a large overhaul, she comes up with a plan to stop renovations. It is, after all, the same building her parents got engaged in forty some years ago. It is a place where her mere existence was created.
Jade already lost her mother and with her dad now dying too, Jade is more determined than ever to do anything to honor her parent’s love story. Learning that the tall, dark and handsome man she plays poker with is the same man who is going to renovate the building, gives Jade a run for her money.
Already having a crush on Zander—he’s definitely a five-card stud—and finding out he’s the one that has plans to destroy part of the building, has Jade going all in. Will her attempts to stop construction push Zander to fold? Or is it possible that by saving her parent’s love story, she’s also making her own?

Excerpt

“Moon Bitten” by Angharad Thompson Rees

I pull the hood of my red cape over my head, concealing myself against the gust of frigid winds biting with ice and spite. The skies hold the promise of more snow to come. He does not let go of my hand. And it’s not the snow concerning him.
“Blaxton,” I say—his name as sweet as honey on my recently-kissed lips. “Do not concern yourself. It is but a short walk through the woods, and yes, I promise to stay on the tracks.”
I raise an eyebrow, threatening him to contradict me. But he should know my penchant for wandering and losing myself. That’s how we met—deep within the woods in the first days of spring, when frost thawed atop the lake and his green eyes melted ice from my nervous heart.
He pulls me into his chest, his body warm against my own, tempting me to stay. Tempting me to never leave. I melt into him, lips hot as the first flakes of snow dance from the sky.
“Blaxton, no,” I say, pulling myself away with reluctance. The space between his heart and mine gapes as if the very universe could fill the hole. “I have to get back to Grandma, you know I do.”
His face drops at her mention. Grandma despises him despite his soft features, warm honey eyes and sweet, crooked smile. Though I suspect her hatred is aimed more at the threat he will steal me from her. Just as her daughter, my mother, was stolen so many years ago I can no longer picture her face. But that was different. Mother did not fall in love as I have. She was taken…
By wolves.
A perfectly timed howl echoes across the valley, carried along the land muted by snow. Blaxton raises his own eyebrow at the beast’s call and I laugh. An empty tin-like sound of hollow mirth and creeping fear.
“I’ll be fine. Tomorrow,” I say, allowing a smile to creep across my frost-numb face. “Let’s meet tomorrow, same time and place.”
Blaxton captures loose strands of my red hair in his pale fingers. The contrast startling like blood on snow. Tucking the strands behind my left ear, his fingers trail my cheek as he kisses my forehead. “Tomorrow,” he promises.

Review: Fahrenheit

Fahrenheit Fahrenheit by Leigh Lennon
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

My first few Leigh Lennon books had me hooked, sucking me in deep, leaving me desperate for more of the author’s work. Since my first Leigh Lennon book, the author has written across different genres, and I find I enjoy some of her work more than others. In fact, I have clear favourites, to the point where there are a few of her books when I cannot claim to be crazy about.

With The Power of Three Love series, I was unsure about the first book. I’m no stranger to erotic novels, I read too many of them if I’m honest, yet I find I can never connect with Leigh Lennon’s scenes. It’s not to the degree of certain authors where I feel uncomfortable, but the feelings evoked are not what they should be. Foundations, book one in The Power of Three Love series, made it clear this would be another series where the erotic nature of the story would be higher than the emotional impact I enjoy in other Leigh Lennon novels. However, it won me over enough to receive a four-star rating and I was curious about Fahrenheit.

With Fahrenheit, I found myself battling between a two-star rating and a three-star rating throughout the book. A part of this is due to the heavy focus on the erotic, and the fact it evoked the wrong emotions from me, but mostly it was the fact I felt we came into this story when it was already partway through. Yes, we got to see bits and pieces in Foundations, but it still felt like we were missing too much information with this one. There were too many blanks, and even the constant flashing back to prior conversations failed to fill in enough for me.

What made me decide to be generous and round up, instead of the rounding down I came very close to doing, was the interaction between Levi and Jordan. I enjoyed the way they were complete opposites and worked so well together. They were easily my favourite thing about the book.

Overall, Fahrenheit had good points but it did not wow me in the way other Leigh Lennon reads have.

Review: Wake

Wake Wake by Elizabeth Knox
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

I love a good horror story, and Elizabeth Knox’s Wake sounded like something I would adore. When I heard about it, I was reminded of a few of my favourite horror stories and was desperate to dive in. In fact, I went in with very high expectations.

It was clear from early on this book wasn’t going to suck me in the way I had hoped. Despite this, I continued. I was curious to see how everything would come together and was holding out hope the book would improve and wow me. Instead of improving, my enjoyment of the book continued to lessen. I found myself close to putting this book down and leaving it unfinished on a number of occasions, yet I persisted.

My issue was I never came to care about any of the characters, I never connected to anyone. With what happened, I should have felt something – even if it was a negative emotion – but I never did. I was indifferent throughout, and not even the events could suck me in deep. Early in the book, I thought I would be giving it a two-star rating, as it left me wanting to see how things played out. When we failed to get the big ending I’d hoped for, when things seemed to happen far too easy, I found myself dropping the rating to a single star.

I’m sure there are plenty who will enjoy this one, but it was not for me.

Review: The Cliff House

The Cliff House The Cliff House by RaeAnne Thayne
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I have read and enjoyed a few RaeAnne Thayne books and was eager to dive into The Cliff House when I heard there was a new standalone for me to jump into. Although I have given this one a three-star rating, know I had a big debate with this one. A part of me wanted to round my three-point-five-star rating up, and I almost did, but the part of me that compared it to my other RaeAnne Thayne reads had me rounding down.

I did have a lot of fun with this one – as always, RaeAnne Thayne sucked me in deep and I was happy to devour the book in a single sitting – but it is not my favourite read from the author. It dealt with plenty of topics, it had some great characters, but I feel as though some of the things were never dealt with as deeply as they could have been. In some ways, I believe I would have enjoyed this one more as three individual books, allowing us to go even deeper into each of the characters stories.

As it was, The Cliff House was an addictive read with plenty packed into it. We have wonderful characters and individual stories that tie together so well. We get to see so much throughout, experience many facets of life, and everything that happens leaves you unable to put the book down. It’s a story that dealt with a lot more than I expected, one that packs a punch on many fronts.

If you’re a fan of any RaeAnne Thayne series, I certainly recommend giving this standalone a read.

One button at a time, I undo his shirt and plant a kiss on every new patch of revealed skin. Tearing it off him, I add it to the pile on the floor.
“You’re playing with fire, girl.”
I stick out my tongue at him, and he has me on my back in a flash, his body flush against mine. A hard bulge presses against the apex of my thighs, making my pussy clench with anticipation, but I push at him.
“Hey, I wasn’t finished.”
He regards me, then pushes up, his eyes almost black as he stares hungrily at me. “Get on with it,” he growls.
Our gazes are locked, as I pull the belt out of its loops and drop it to the floor. Pulling down the zipper, I make sure to brush against his hard length. He bucks and lets out a grunt. I grin and push him onto his back, then I pull off his pants and socks in a few jerky moves. Sitting back, I admire my work and the positively beautiful creature before me. He nods at his underwear. I’m more than happy to oblige and pull the last piece of fabric off him, shivering as I take in the breathtaking man in my bed.

LUCY
I’ve always held my own.
I’m determined.
I’m happy.
I’m strong.
Not right now, though. Right now I’m weak.
Pathetic.
Because I screwed up, I screwed up in a way I can’t fix.
I destroyed someone.
I stomped on a heart.
I broke the one rule all women should live by.
There is no coming back from it.
Yet, I can’t seem to find the strength to stop.
Nicolai. That name. It ruins me.
I tried to stay away.
I fought so hard.
I knew what he was. Who he was.
I knew what he had done.
But I can’t seem to stop.
I try and forget how his hands felt against my skin.
How his lips felt on mine.
How his body moved. God, his body.
I’m a terrible person.
A terrible sister.
But take me to hell, if you must, so long as he comes with me.

DAMON
Get a girl, they say.
Find a woman, Damon.
Settle down.
I have one thing to say to that. Women equal drama.
You know it’s true.
I don’t have time for drama.
Why can’t I be different? Why do I have to follow the trend?
My story doesn’t have to match theirs. Hell, when the time comes I’ll find the right one.
Until then, I’ll stick to friends. Yep. I can do friends.
Lucy. She’s my friend. My best friend, if I’m being honest.
She’s strong.
She’s determined.
She kind of holds my pieces together. And I hers.
In the most non-romantic way I can think of.
She has plenty of her own drama, she keeps us both busy.
She’s like a sister.
No, scratch that.
Lucy, she’s the kind of woman who could run a country.
Hold a family together.
That’s the kind of person she is.
The lady of the house.
Yep.
That’s our Lucy.
Knights Lady.
