Review: Smut

Smut Smut by Karina Halle
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I had such a hard time deciding upon my rating for Smut. I think, in the end, it comes down to setting my expectations too high.

You see, I’m a big Karina Halle fan. I’m always curious about the author’s next release, ready to dive into more of the author’s words. For a long time, Smut has been sitting on my Kindle. In fact, it was the first Karina Halle book to grab my attention. It sounded like so much fun, and I’ve been holding out on reading it, which means when I finally started to read, I found myself wishing I was receiving more.

At first, I found this one really difficult to get into. The storyline had the potential to be interesting, but it did not suck me in the way I had hoped it would. In fact, I reached the point where I put the book down and picked up something else. When I came back to it, I found things were much the same, at least for a while. It took a long time, but the book finally caught my attention. When this happened, I finally managed to power through it until the end.

I’m not one hundred percent sure what was missing, but the usual Karina Halle magic was lacking in this one. For me, at least. I wanted to see how things came together, but it never blew my mind. There were some moments of humour when I chuckled, but there were a lot of moments where the humour felt over the top and like it was trying too hard. There were a lot of interesting elements introduced in the story, but I found myself wishing we had received more from them than we did.

Don’t get me wrong, this was a fun read. There were some four-star moments in it – enough for this to be a rounded down three-point-five-star rating – but it wasn’t enough for me to label it a favourite Karina Halle read.
