Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I adored Brigid Kemmerer’s A Curse So Dark and Lonely and am counting down until I get my hands on the next Cursebreakers book. In the meantime, I decided to dive into another Brigid Kemmerer read. I had a bit of a debate as to which I would start with, as there were many that interested me, but availability at the library made the choice for me in the end.
It seems, I have the library to thank. Letters to the Lost hooked me. It took a couple of chapters for me to overcome my fear of it being a cliché story, but, once it got going, I could not put it down. I loved the characters and the story and powered through it to see how everything came together.
There was so much emotion to be felt throughout, keeping me glued to the pages. I loved every moment of it, couldn’t stop thinking about it, and am now annoyed that I do not have More Than We Can Tell in my hands ready to read. As I need more of the world and the characters, I really need to find out more about a certain side character, and I cannot wait to be blown away again.
Without a doubt, this is a four-point-five-star rating. In fact, I considered giving it a five-star rating, but there were just little things I had wanted more of and that had me rounding down instead.

Review: Ruined With You
Ruined With You by J. Kenner
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Ruined With You is the third book in J. Kenner’s Stark Security series, and like the prior books the story works as a standalone. Despite this, I will admit to certain sections of the story going over the top of my head due to the fact I have not read all J. Kenner’s books. There were so many links to other books and series, which is great for long time fans, but felt like overkill to me.
Despite the fact there were a few points where I couldn’t keep the story of every side character straight in my head, Ruined With You was another addictive read from J. Kenner. It is not my favourite read from the author, but it certainly kept me hooked throughout.
There was plenty happen throughout the story, ensuring I was happy to power through it in no time at all. The ending was a bit too easy for my liking, but it brought things together well. The characters played off each other well, but it wasn’t as intense as the romance in the prior books. It’s why I enjoyed this one but did not love it.
It’s certainly worth the read for fans, though.

Review: I'll Keep You Safe
I'll Keep You Safe by Peter May
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I’m a huge Peter May fan. After devouring the Lewis trilogy, I was desperate for more. I had a lot of fun with the author’s other series – the Enzo Files and the China series – along with some of the standalones I picked up. Thus, I found myself hopeful for another great standalone through I’ll Keep You Safe.
As much as I wanted to enjoy this one, I was disappointed by it. In fact, it’s my least favourite Peter May read. I was never sucked into this in the way I had hoped for, and the mystery aspect failed to grab me. To be brutally honest, at times it felt like a bit of a chore. There was never anything that left me desperate for more – instead, it felt like a lot of possibilities were introduced and never really taken as far as they could have been.
I think the thing that let me down the most, however, was the ending. It was intended to surprise, but I found myself rolling my eyes instead. It felt like a cheat, which isn’t like Peter May at all. Therefore, I’m putting this one down as a blip and hoping my next Peter May read is better.

Review: Empire of Sand
Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Tasha Suri’s Empire of Sand is one of those books I wanted to love, but I found myself disappointed instead. I had hoped to find a new series addiction, hoping I would find myself desperate to jump into the second The Books of Ambha series, but I fear such is not the case.
Empire of Sand did interest me at points, in fact it was a three-star rating for a while. I was happy to power through it and see what happened next, curious as to how everything came together. Although I was curious, I was never invested.
Then a migraine hit, and I had to put the book aside. Had I not put the book aside for a week, this would have probably been a three-star rating. Due to my time away, I found myself unable to get back into it. Thus, my rating dropped. It was more of a two-point-five-star rating, but I couldn’t bring myself to round up.
I think my issue is that I expected more. It would have maintained the three-star rating upon my return, except there was never the sense of danger and fear that I had hoped for. Everything felt too easy, and the tension I’d hoped for was lacking. I wanted something bigger, something shocked, and felt let-down by how easily things ended after so much build up.
I’m sure there will be any who enjoy this one, but for me it was a bit of a let-down.

“I fucking hate you, you know that?” His words come out a
taut, restrained, and he stares straight into my eyes, delivering the blow. I
guess I’m becoming immune to his antics, because I just nod my head, biting
back the smile that desperately wishes to break free.
Maybe you do. But not nearly as much as you wish…
“And you’re still going to give me the most precious thing
you’ve got right now, even knowing I’ve got no love for you? Knowing I don’t
even like you, not even a little bit?”
I roll my eyes. If he’s trying to scare me away, to make me
second guess myself, it’s not going to work. And if that’s the
case, I think that speaks more to his own shitshow of feelings and not being
able to sort through them, than anything I’ve done.
“Steph says sex angry sex is the best. I’m betting hate sex
might be even better…” I shoot him a cocky smirk.
“How will you know? You have nothing to compare it to…”
“Not now, maybe. But I will one day.”

Review: Love Me Tomorrow
Love Me Tomorrow by Maria Luis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Love Me Tomorrow is the third book in the Put A Ring On It Series, and with it Maria Luis brings us another wonderful read. In addition to being the third book in the series, it also ties in with the NOLA Heart series. Despite this, Love Me Tomorrow works perfectly fine as a standalone story. Those invested in the series will get a wee bit more as we finally get answers to some of the questions we’ve had throughout, but the romance itself works perfectly without any prior knowledge.
As with all my Maria Luis reads, this one sucked me in from the very start. Once I started, I could not put it down. It was a book I had to finish in a single sitting, as I was desperate to see how each of the pieces came together. Every time I thought all the reveals had happened, something more would appear and surprise me.
There was so much to love – from the chemistry between the characters, the growth they go through during the story, and the individual stories that play out on the side. I was invested in it all, so invested would happily read spin-off stories of pretty much any of the characters we were introduced to (even those I disliked, such was my level of enjoyment in this one).
Without a doubt, fans of the series need to give this one a read to finally experience Savannah’s story.

“How the
hell should I know why she hasn’t stopped by this week?” I defend. “She’s
probably just busy preparing for her mid-terms or some shit.”
“Try again,
dickhead.”
“What do
you want me to say, Vince?” I hate how guilty my voice is right now.
“How about
the truth? Or if that’s too hard for you, then maybe explain why you’ve been
staring at her like she’s about to disappear.”
“Are you
telling me that I can’t look at her either now? I’m just keeping an eye on
her... or do you have issues with that too?”
“She
doesn’t need you looking out for her,” he bites back. “That’s what she has me
for.”
“Whatever.”
I’ve had enough. Enough of him, enough of her, and enough of our pointless
frustrating conversation. I stand up from my chair and march out the front
door.
“For fuck’s
sakes, Lambert,” Vince snaps, following me out. “Is walking away from this
really how you want to finish our discussion?”
I pull off
my ball cap and run a hand through my hair.
I don’t
know.
I don’t
know what to say. I don’t know what to do…
I don’t
fucking know.
Vince is my
best friend. I broke his trust by falling for his sister, and I’ve been lying
to him about it because pretending that my feelings aren’t real is better than
the outcome of telling him I broke my promise. And the worse part of it all: he
has every right not to trust me. I could never be the man Aubrey deserves. From
the day I was born, destiny has made sure I would be spending my entire life
being deprived of that luxury.
Everything
I touch, everything I love turns to ash.
I raise my
shoulders before walking away. “I guess it is.”
“Who the
hell would have guessed that my best friend was a fucking pussy,” he jeers when
my back is turned.
“Excuse
me?”
A shadow of
a smirk crosses his face. Had I not spun on my heels when I did, I would have
missed it.
“What kind
of man are you if you can’t even step up to your own feelings?”
“A loyal
one,” I argue. “One who decided to respect his best friend’s wishes when he
said his sister was off limits.”

“I have to get whatever this is out, before it moves again,
so … watch out.”
Before I have the chance to contemplate running into the
living room and dive bombing onto the couch, he pulls the tile down, and dust
explodes everywhere.
Coughing, from the onslaught of insulation falling out I
jolt when something smacks into my chest.
I scream, ready to lodge the thing off of me when I hear the
tiniest, most pitiful meow.
“It’s a kitty!” I exclaim in surprise. It comes out sounding
more like kittaaay. I see big blue eyes and dusty oatmeal fur
before I hug the kitten to my neck.
Jamie steps off the toilet lid, sets down the tile he cut
out, and rubs drywall dust and insulation from his hair. “A cat?”
“A kitten.” I hold out the fluffy furball proudly so he can
see. “My ceiling gave birth.”
He frowns at the kitten. “It’s dirty.”
“She’s perfect,” I croon, cuddling the squirming kitten to
my chest. I don’t even know if it’s a girl, but it feels like she is.
“You’re not keeping the cat, Miranda,” he growls in warning.
“Animals are not allowed.”
I jut my bottom lip out. “I should get special privileges.
I am fucking the landlord.” I wink at him while petting the
kitten on the top of her fluffy head. To the cat I say, “How’d you even get up
in my ceiling?”
Jamie sighs, scrubbing his hands down his jaw. “Its mom
probably got on the roof somehow and this one got separated.”
I hold the fluffy puff out at arm’s length. “You can be the
Beta to my Alpha. The Fettuccine to my Alfredo. Ooh, that should be your name,
Fettuccine.”
Jamie groans. “You’re not keeping it.”
“No, of course not,” I assure him. “I’ll take her to the
animal shelter tomorrow.”
“Mhmm.”
He doesn’t believe me. He’s right to be wary. No way am I
willingly giving up this cat. It feels like some sort of sign. If a kitten
falls from your ceiling, clearly it’s chosen you, right? The wand chooses the
wizard, after all, so can’t the cat choose the cat lady?
“I promise,” I tell him, crossing the fingers of my left
hand behind my back. “Fettuccine will be out of here before you know it.”
Sure, I won’t be able to keep this a secret forever, but
hopefully I can come up with a way to persuade him later.
His eyes narrow and I hope to God my nose isn’t twitching,
because I’m in deep shit if it is.
“You shouldn’t name it. Names lead to attachment.”
“You shouldn’t call me sweetheart. Nicknames show a kind of
fondness,” I mock playfully.
He leans his head back, looking up at the ceiling as if he’s
begging it for answers.
“Between you, Toby, and my mom, I’m headed to an early
grave.” I grin widely at him as he lowers his head and looks at me. “What?” he
asks with confusion.
“You called him Toby.”
“Dammit,” he curses, bending to move the tile out of the
way. “Don’t tell him I slipped up.”
Petting the cat, I lean my hip against the counter. “Ooh,
blackmail. I won’t tell if you let me keep the cat.”

best sums up my life, but it’s the good kind of crazy and I wouldn’t change it
for anything.
